Potentially possible to overheat ?

I was driving my 1983 5spd the other day 20 miles from work to my house on the highway @ about 70mph average speed. Usually in city driving my water temp stays at about a quater or half way, however right before I took my exit and began city driving once again my water temp was steadily climbing to about three quaters, or slightly above the mid mark.

Is this normal? I didn't drive long enough to see if it would reach an unsafe temperature, but would like to know wether it would have overheated, or it is normal to be somewhat over the midmark on water temp during 70-80mph 20+ mile drive...

Thanks as always!

well, it's hard to say what's wrong, because there could be several reasons for the temp creeping upwards. but i would say that if the car never normally did that, and it's doing it now, then something obviously is breaking or has broken.

when was the last time you checked/changed the parts of your cooling system?

mine used to do that...didn't reach 2/3 so i never really worried, but now it always sits right around 1/8 - 1/4. i think it may have been my old main pulley.
