porting: how close is too close

Hey guys its that time of year again. I started my SP on my 12A tonight. Was wondering about porting the edge along the rotor o-ring. The circular almost groove that goes along the port. What the danger zone as far as getting close to that before your start leaking oil past the ring when its near the port? In my case I am asking about the area just before the port would close off.

Thanks,
Ron Davis

The best thing you can do is make an acrylic plastic template of your port, then partially assemble the motor so you can see the path that the side, corner, and oil seals take across the port. This will also give you a good idea of port opening and closing and any clearance issues you may have. Use your porting template to make the plastic one. I scribed the the port profile with an x-acto knife, then marked it with a magic marker, in the groove, wiping off the excess marking.

In my case, I went with solid corner seals. I couldn't see the corner seal plugs lasting long at all.
