poor running 1979 rx-7

hi all,Just got a really nice 1979 rx7,in non running condition as yet,one owner, husband died last year and was supposed to have fitted a new engine just before.Has been standing for at least a year. Here are my problems,Will not idle without choke, backfires alot, does not rev out and then backfires out of exhaust alot.I am new to rotarys.things i have done so far are un flooded the engine at first as the floats were stuck.have checked compression and get around 120psi on all spark holes.Seems to have been fitted with new distributer.any thoughts or fixes would b emuch appreciated as the car is in great condition otherwise, totally original.thanks Colin

Look up timing in a haynes RX-7 manual.

Check for three pulses on the compression test. The 3 combustion chambers per rotor rotate using the same spark plug. If compression is the issue, you can feel and hear it when cranking the engine with open throttle and the lead spark plugs removed.

Seems liked you checked the plugs condition, so that you know that it isn't running too rich or too lean.

Good luck

ps...mazdatrix is extremely helpful over the phone, you will patronize them despite their astronomical prices.

fuel filter change!
Located under the car, driver side in front of rear axle.
Get the old gas out of the car if you can (no drain on 79 tanks, so you might need to attach something to the tank side of the fuel filter-line and drain that way or siphon the tank). If the car has sat a long time, good chance the tank is crudded up, meaning crap inside will keep plugging up the filter. Only fix is remove the tank (not hard, held in with 2 straps plus various hose connections), cleaning in a chem dip like at a rad shop, refinish the inside with something like POR15's tank sealer (por-15.com) kit. But you MUST get most of the fuel out first because it is a real _bee-otch_ to man-handle the tank out with liquid in it - and NO, the tanks are not available new anymore.
Great car! Good luck - keep tabs on assistance here. Lots of great help! Welcome!
