plugs for 85 GSL SE

I just went to pickup new plugs and the guy behind the counter said they are unavailable. I tried AutoZone and Kragen, and neither said they can even order any. Where can I find plugs? Are they dealer only?

I checked the plugs that are in right now and they are Autolite 2526 with a single electrode. I read that the original plugs had a triple electrode. This is a car I have only owned 1 week. Perhaps someone has installed incompatable plugs? I also have been having idle problems, perhaps this is the source?

Where can I get plugs, and which ones do you recommend?

Thanks,
Ben

Here is the part number for the NGK plugs...

NGK BR8EQ14

They are pricey but that is what pritty much every one on the board recomends.

See a conventional plugh has the potential to stick too far into the rotor housing which can cause big trouble for the Apex seals

Good luck

There are only 2 plugs available for RX-7's, NGK BR8EQ14's and BR7EQ14's (a 'colder' plug, IIRC). This is because the rotary engine fires much more frequently than a standard spark plug in a piston engine.

The net result of this is that if you attempt to use other plugs in your car, you risk burning them up prematurely, i.e, losing performance, or damaging the rotors from cracking off single electrodes. You will see that the 4-electrode BR8EQ14's have very compact and short electrodes which do not stick out much at all. This is to provide a greater distribution of spark.

Also, the rotary engine blows the fuel/air mixture past the spark source during ignition, very unlike a piston engine that is gradually compressing a solid cylinder of air/fuel up toward the spark plug during compression. This is the specific reason why spark plugs are identified for RX-7's. HTH,
