Please help a new 1st gen buyer
Hello people.
Hopefully, you can look past the fact that I am still HondaGuy, until I buy my RX-7, and realize, that I am BUYING AN RX-7!!!
Ok, now that we're past that. My girlfriend works for a dealership up here in MN, we found a nice looking 84 RX-7, that needs some of the GHETTONESS taken off, but I was hoping to get some advice here.
The dealership obviously has no clue about the car, so, maybe I can get info here.
How do I figure out which model the car is? Does anything give it away?
I have heard mentions of a 12a motor and a 13b motor. How do I figure out what it has?
Also, what do you think of the car currently? Any suggestions?

Nope, probably a GSL... It is a GSL if it has rear disc brakes..
But it is not a GSL-SE. I see a choke in one of the interior pics. and the GSL-SE does not have one.

Not to mention, it says GSL on the back, LOL.
Still, very, very nice. All I would do is to remove the chrome fender lips.

Yep, GSL. 12A motor, power everything (some even had pwr steering). 4 wheel discs (small ones). Looks well taken care of. Engine bay pics? If its not too much $$$$ I'd say get it. Oh milage?

The mileage is one of the first things to attract me to the car, only 40,317 original miles! I'm heading up to the dealership to check it out in 2 hours.
Any idea on the maker of the bodykit? Or even the wheels?

Ok, so, based on the fact that the car appears MINT, with 40k actual miles, what would you consider it to be worth?
I know it is a 1984, everyone is saying GSL.
Let me know your idea of it's value so I can debate the price myself.

Well...
You can get a good condition 1st gen for about $2k CDN, but without the body kit that your potential car has. The low low miles are a benefit. The car just went off it's warranty distance wise. (Though the 3 years were spent a long time ago)

If it's as clean as it looks in the pics, and it is a GSL, and the miles are correctly stated, I'd offer $3000(US) and pay as much as $3750ish.
GS and below = rear drum, open diff, crank windows
GSL = GS + rear discs, LSD, power windows, better stock stereo, sunroof.
GSL-SE = GSL + bigger brakes, fuel injected 13b, nicer interior. Only avail in 84,85 and worth $1k-$2k more than GSL.
Valuing 1st gens is hard - they are old and their condition varies quite a bit.

The kit is nice man, and the car looks good. I'd even go upto $4000 for it... though it really depends on how bad you want it. How many other dealerships have you looked at? how many other rx7's have you seen advertised and actually looked? the car certainly looks good, and with that mileage if that's true it'll be a steal.
Just do one thing for me and loose the rain/sun visor on the rear. YUUUCK!

only 40,000 miles????? for a car going on 20 years old that is insane! Means it was driven like 2,000 miles a year!
Looks very clean, and I love that dual exaust! Its probably fake tho.

this has probly been answered, if u actually look on the engine it will say 12A or 13B on it, its the easiest way to tell if ur not sure of model, unless u know the VIN codes

Hmmmm... Is that a Mariah kit? Looks a lot like one... Anyone?
Looks nice. Take the chrome crap off the fenders, and change the steering wheel, even to something like a cheap Grant. Then just drive it... looks pretty nice!

Maybe I missed it, but I can't believe nobody mentioned the hideous wing, the Ferrari-esk ridges on the lower rocker panels, or the funky-looking fog light holes on the front air dam.

I'll post some pics in the daylight...
The Louvers - I'd have to say I like them, compared to what an RX-7 looks like without them.
The Steering Wheel - I forget which brand it is, I thought it was some cheapy Grant Pep Boys deal when I first seen it in the pics, but it's actually not too bad (aside of the fact that its the only wood colored item in the whole car) and it has a nice feel to it. Reminds me alot of my MOMO wheel on my 1971 MGB Roadster.
The Wing - I really don't think it's too "ricey". It goes well with the new shape of the car and the bodykit.
Those Chrome fender lips - Actually not bad at all in person. In the pics they seem like cheap Pep Boys Aluminum foil pieces, but they are thick, and fit the car perfectly. Did Mazda or anyone ever release parts like this?
The Exhaust - Sorry guys, it IS true DUAL EXHAUST. I haven't gotten to take enough of a look at it to see any brand tags if it has one. I also haven't been able to hear it, since the exhaust seems to be separated at about the middle of the car. Must have been a bad weld there? The exhaust tips actually go THROUGH the rear valence of the kit, which looks pretty sharp.
Well, the car IS a 1984 RX-7 GSL, 12A. The only faults are the exhaust in need of reconnection, I think the radio needs another antenna (havent even figured out where that is).
The tach doesn't work well until the car is warmed up. (Is that common with these old cars in cold weather?) I was surprised to hear a loud buzzer/beep in the car when I wound out a gear. Is that a stock RX-7 redline warning?
There is not a spec of rust on the car, and the paintjob is QUITE nice, the entire car was stripped down and repainted, every detail. Is this a stock color? Seems sort of grayish teal, or gunmetal blue-ish.....
The center console seems to be apart at the hinge, but clips in at the front, and doesn't move. It has working foglights in those front holes, and the previous owner was nice enough to install those Blue LED lights in the washer nozzles on the hood. Being that I got a ticket for WHITE ones looking blue up here on my other car, these will be coming out immediately.
Aside from that, the passenger mirror doesn't work from the switch, but.......I'm the only one driving this car, it's positioned where I want it.....who cares?
I'll have to do some research on the wheels too, I forget the brand as of now, but I'll post pics in the daylight.
I picked the car up yesterday for $3,241(US) out the door.

I still have to check on the brand name of the wheels.....
I am back at the dealership (where my girlfriend works) and I have the car in service getting the windows checked out.
I don't know if its a motor problem, or off track or what, but they only move an inch or 2 either up or down.
I hope they get at least the driver's window up all the way. Driving in like 2 degree weather with the window down for 30 minutes, at 90mph, gets COLD.
