Please help me before i shot this damn car

I know this stuff really is'nt that hard but for some reason. I can not get this thing to idle right to save my life. I can get it were it does'nt want to die on me but then the idle is to darn high.. Some clown screwed with the throtle stop screw and i have now idea how to adjust this and so far i have found nothing in either manual hanyes or service manual. Iv been threw the standard idle adjustments like 12 times. now that im done ranting thanks for listening if you've read thus far. Im sure everything on this car needs to be adjusted. so im ganna write what i have done and so forth so you guys can tell me were i went wrong. Or if theres a nice guy in the chicago land area that would pay me a visit that would be great. Right now i would settle with a phone number Got the free long distance so here we go.

85 Gsl-se
M/T

Car stalls on stops and cant seem to adjust the idle air adjust screw to make this thing idle/ run right heres what iv done.

1. Tested TPS it's with in the OHM rang +/- alittle.
2. Tested TPS adjustment, I have Voltage only on one side of the tps. However i can never get Voltage on both side to know how far to go back on the adjustment.
3. Some clown adjusted the throttle stop screw so im lost on that one. Played with it abit in conjuction with the air adjust screw.
4. Set the dashpot so it is right on it at 2330 rpm.
5. removed and cleaned BAC did'nt look bad. everything seemed to move as advertized. No the only thing that seemed weird to me and maybe this is normal, When i disconect the vacum line to the BAC the one in the back of it. The car idles up and down between 1000-1500 or so.
6. I removed the air duct and all the jazz and everything there seem up to snuff.
7. And yes i am trying to set the idle with the vent valves disconnected.
Im sure i did'nt do this in this order but they were all teted out and seemed o.k. to my noobish 7 mind. so if there is anyone out here which im sure there is that can write me a check list or walkthrough that will cover eveything to check in a step by step. Ive been here http://www.nellump.net/peri/epi/firs...gslseIdle.html
And the idle adjustments dont seem to work out for me.. Thanks to all hope i can get this thing running right soon. i love driveing this thing..

Have you done a compression test yet?

That would be the 1st step.. Unfortunatly i am about 2.5 hours out of chicagoland.

Nope sure have'nt the car was running fine until i removed the A/C and power steering. the idle was alittle low but never stalled and ran like a horse. maybe i should pick up a compression gage though.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Hunting rpm's at idle, wont idle unless its set really high. Vacuum leak. Maybe you knocked something off during your removal of the A/C and P/S.

Maybe look at your throttle cable? I was trying to hunt down a vac leak the other day since my car was idling at 3000 rpms (was at around 1200 before) and it turns out when I was trying to get the o2 sensor out I smacked the throttle cable, moving it just enough to set it higher. I adjusted it to where it should be and it idles perfectly at 800 rpms now.

I doubt that's your problem, but it might be worth checking.

Ok so i went out side to mess with this darn thing. I thought maybe if i started from 0 i could get this thing right. Well i adjusted the fast idle screw had messed with it earlier. Did'nt know what i was doing when i set it to the line up marks and cranked her up. Warmed up and stalled out on me. sense it was warm i rechecked the TPS. No i have voltage on the oposite side of were i did before. dont know but this thing just keeps stalling out on me. I really hope someone can write me a walkthrough on idle adjustment from the air intake all the way down every screw nut and bolt if you will. It would be greatly appretiated. IM me if you will thanks again hopefully we can get this fixed soon

Since it was running fine before it is not likely compression.. RX7carl is correct, it sounds like a vacuum leak.

So check the intake manfold for leaks.. good way is to get a spray bottle filled with water and spray around the intake joints. If the idle changes drasticly in one place, you found the leak.

You will need to fix that 1st before you can correctly set the idle.

Sounds like your throttle isn't returning properly.

First, make up the TPS light tester thing, it's a million times easier to use.

Now, set your tps, then floor the car and let off. Does one light come back on? Both? None? It should be one. I've had a problem with this, as have 2 or 3 people I know. To fix, get a heavier return spring, and/or remove and lubricate your throttle cable.

Along the topic of adjusting the throttle cable, how do you actually do that? Like mine for instance, seems to have about 1" of "slop" at the start, how would I get it so that it's nice and tight. It doesn't seem to be adjustable on either end.

On the throttle body end you loosen the 2 nuts on the cable and use that to move it further out on the braket to tighten the slack.

Go take a look its pretty simple.

Thx will do. I had in my mind that there was just a round ball "stop" on the cable, but I think I know what you mean about the TB. I'll take a look later today.

Well she's running again.... now i just have to get the throttle to come all the way down were its supposed to be. It's running at 1200 real smooth no stalls no searching. I took the air duct back out and looked around abit. Disconnected everything under there and reconnected it all. including the Air flow meter. once that was done I re checked my work last from last night the idle cam adjustments seemed to be in limitation. started and warmed up car. Check TPS had one light on "Left one if it matters" so i started to adjsut that trying to get two lights on so i could adjust the TPS right in between those two point asper https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...postid=1335894. Could not for the life of me get two light so im guessing that the TPS is craped. I left the air filter and cap off during the warm up so i could hear the air flow meter open and it did. i put the air idle adjust screw all the way in and 1 out seems to run good there ( might have to bring it down a tad later once i fiqure out how to adjust the throttle stop..

Does anyone have any ideas how to adjust this. if i push down on the tps adjust screw the car idles at 1000 so im sure if i could back off whatever is holding it up i would be good to go.. Also check for vacuum leaks again with some carb cleaner. could'nt find any what so ever...

Sorry I don't know how to adjust it, but did you know about the online Factory Service Manual? Check the FAQ; I'm sure the procedure will be in the manual.
