Oil the pulleys? :-/
I could be wrong, but that doesn't sound like a very good idea. Won't oil make them slip more? (and propably deteriorate the rubber?)

Have you tried replacing the coolant level sensor? (or checking the coolant level control unit under the dash?)

I'm not an expert on the S3 1st gens, but I believe if you disconnect the oscillator at the front of the engine compartment it will stop the terrible noise at least.

Good luck

Could oil new pulleys but before you do that check the belt tension and condition. Apparently a little oil on the underside of the belt that goes around the pulley can help reduce noise.

As for the sensor I had the same problem ages ago. Firstly check your level with the engine running (when the engine is cold so you don't burn yourself!)...undo the cap and squeeze the hoses to see if the level is right up... if the level is down a little than this could be enough for the sensor to think you are running dry since it is right at the top of the radiator and it needs a good lock pressure with the cap.

Replace your cap if its old.

Replace level sensor. Pretty cheap and easy to do.

Well i was talking about the thing that spins the pullies (not sure what they are called) not the actual rubber itself
