pinion removal

How. Just How.

Kid's GSLSE ring and pinion went hillbilly. Now with teeth missing we need to repair. Removed the jack-o-lantern. (you know, 'cause of the teeth) Pulled the LSD. Pulled the flange. removed the ring. got the oil seal for the flange removed. I thoroughly believed a couple whacks with a hammer would relate the hold. I see no retaining clips. Tried a sledge. nothing. Of course the pinion is already destroyed from the failure. Im just not getting it. Cant find any concise Mazda tutorials. did find a Toyota one that implied the pinion would slop out like a spent *****.

yet here I am. frustrated by irrelevant search results.

The pinion should fall towards the inside. Does it move at all?

Can it spin? If so then the bearings haven't seized on to it.

It spins. Just is not budging. Perhaps I should trade the hammer for a purse.

I just had this problem a month ago. Mine was severly overheated. I used a hydraulic press with 12ton bottle jack. Propane torch. Lots of pb blaster and aerokroil. And about 45 minutes whacking on it. The inner bearing race was almost welded to the shaft. 6 tapered roller bearings were welded to the inner race. A mess but it appears the pinion gear is still iseable with a little Loctite 620 retaining compound. I actually have the pinion with me at the track with me so i will try to take a pic and post it

Basically I am saying you need to push harder 😁

Oh. And yes it would still turn, albeit very sloppily
