I was looking at my engine the other day(85 GSL) and noticed a place under the blue intake can about 1 inch(or more) wide for a hose to fit over. I've searched our forum and the net looking for a photo with no luck....On another member's car OnlyOnThurs(I believe an 83 GS), there is a hose that runs from there to the exhaust manifold. When I looked at mine, it looked like I had headers(i dunno). I didn't see where this hose(if I had one) would run to from the air box. I'm still pretty much new to car mech. Does the exh.man. look anything like a header? If I have a header on my car after all, does this 1 inch or so hole on the air box need to be covered, any other spots I should look at on my engine that would need to be addressed that the previous owner may have overlooked? Any help would be appreciated guys! I'm wanting to start tinkering on my car a little more and bring my idle up from 400.....lol...
hey dude, i do not have that hose hooked up either. i'm pretty sure your talkign about the heater thingy though. what it does is take some heat off of mani and sends it to intake to heat the air....for emissions reasons i believe. the exh mani has a shield around it and towards the front is the opening your looking for. if you want the pics I can run down to garage and take them for ya. let me know.
It takes warm air from the manifold surround to the intake to help when the car is cold. If your car runs ok when it is cold then you probably don't need it. If it gets really cold where you live or you're going, it may help with carb icing, but appart from that.....

thanks guys...wow, it looks like I have an after market header(now if I can only find out from what manufacturer). I'll try and get some photos. I know if you get the RB system aren't there some areas that are supposed to be blocked off by some kind of plates or something? Is the whole in the bottom of the air filter can okay to just leave open? I know that the nozzle that extends off the front of the can has a shutter mechanism in it. Thanks again for the prompt responses.....
You can use the RB street header and still retain the ACV and other related stuff, so you don't nessesarily have to block it all off. You can leave the hose off the air box and be fine, but the other vaccum lines need to be there, otherwise it'll suck in unfiltered air. Oh and you can remove that plastic shutter thing off the front of the air box if you want. It's only there to regulate the flow of the hot air from that hose. Go to www.racingbeat.com and look at the pics of the headers, you can figure out if you have one then.
one thing I should add is that the other end of the hose connects to the heat shield around the stock manifold, so someone might have removed the heat sheld due to rust or something, so you may still have the stock manifold on there. Headers are tubular, the stocker is a big chunk of cast iron.

no problem man. Do you still have the air pump on your engine? if not then chances are the ACV has been blocked off already. I don't have a pic of the intake manifold handy, but if someone could come up with one you'd know immediatly
chunky monkey, look in the FAQ sticky at the top of the page theres a "rats nest removal" tutorial, check it out it might interest you. it basically removes all the emission crap. not sure what kind of laws there are in tx, but it sure cleans up engine bay. if anything ifs good reading material. =)

I going to RB's site to try and see if I'm missing anything. Does the RB header have their name on it or anything? I have not removed my air pump yet....I wanna do that next....I also want to remove my power steering pump. It's bolted on still but not connected. is there a way to relocate my alternator lower when I take off teh power steering pump? OnlyOnThurs has a GS and his alternator is located where the PS pump should be it seems....If I can move it, that would allow me to have room to proper have my Direct Fire setup bolted so I don't have my spark cables seem so stretched....damn I need to get that photo.
If your air pump is still hooked up you still have your air control valve. Look at the little black rubber hose going off the air pump, the other end of it attaches to the ACV. As for the header, it should have "RB" cut out on the engine side flange. As for the alternator, yea you can move it down where the PS or AC goes, not sure whats involved in doing so, but I've seen it before, gives the engine the "flat top" look.
