parking brake cable

i have a gsl, with disc brakes. i thought my parking brake cable was snapped somewhere (i think there's 5 cables), because it wasn't holding the car at all, and the lever could be pulled up very high without resistance

i adjusted the cabe which was way loose, and now at 4 clicks the lever is tight, but is still barely holding the car. i say barely because i didn't have the rear wheels off the ground to check, and i could still move the car with my own strength. they seem to hold (very very little).

so my question is, if its tight in the lever, does that mean my cables are good? and is there any other adjustment anywhere else other than the lever? i know drum brakes can be adjusted, but disc?

i am taking my car in for safety check on monday, and its GOT to pass.

There are adjusters at the calipers, too. Check out the photos of these E-brake cable ends on the second page of the thread.

The adjustment at the handle is the only adjustment availible. The rear discs are weak as an e-brake to begin with, but yours sounds like it is not fully functional. The cables may be binding in thier sleeves, the clevis pins that attach the single cables from each disc to the 'Y' maybe rusted/frozen, the lever arms on the calipers where the cables attach may be binding/rusty and/or the brake pads may thin or oil soaked. The mounting pins for the calipers may also be binding and the e-brake and brakes may not be fully functional.

That should keep you busy for a while.

along with what trochoid said, which is VERY true and a common problem, the cables may be stretched. tightening at the e-brake lever will adjust the complete tightness of the cable action.
