Operation: Transplant
*Ding ding ding*
"In this corner, weighing in at 2600 lbs, wearing the faded, ugly red trunks, $100T2's S4 T2!!!"
*applause*
"And in this corner, weighing in at 2200 lbs, in the black trunks, $100T2's 84 FB!!!"
*The 1st gen section goes wild*
Yep, that's right. The FB is back on the jack stands, getting ready to pull the good ol' 12A. In it's place? The S4 T2 motor from my 87, along with my T-04 setup and Microtech. Why?
Well, here's my fucked up, convoluted logic:
My T2 is fugly. Downright fugly. It needs body work, paint, the interior to be reassembled, etc. The FB is also ugly, but doesn't need quite the body work. I want one of these two to have a piston engine...
*the club boos, except for a couple people from the "Other Engines" section*
... and figured the better candidate for the swap would be the T2. It seems like the support is much better for the FC, and the idea of an LS1/T56 or LT1/T56 is just too cool to pass up. I want to color change both cars. To do it best, the motors need to be out. I've been searching the forums diligently...
*the old guys cheer, the newbies say, 'What's the "search button'??"
... and decided I will yank the 12A and tranny. At that point, I can strip down the engine bay of all the useless crap, and get the engine bay painted. I am going to remove all the front sheetmetal to have adequate room to manuever without damaging anything and creating more work for myself. I'm also going to remove the radiator to be replaced with the Fluidyne sitting in my basement, and put in the LT-8s while the car is gutted.
*Several members say, "Yeah, this **** will never get finished, just like all his other projects...*
So, that's basically the point of this thread. I will be putting up lots and lots of pictures, asking lots of questions, and hopefully won't be completely ******* up left and right. I plan on doing this as "right" as possible, meaning I have the wire wheel, grinder and POR-15 standing by, so I can fix all the rust and other crap I come upon.
So, that's it. Here goes nuthin'.

Your projects always start off looking like they'll be done right... but honestly I don't know how this will turn out. At the "end" of many of your previous projects you've stated that time is the main limiting factor, as your family and other parts of your life are (rightfully) extremely important to you.
The only question in my mind is if you didn't have time to finish something as small as a pair of sub enclosures, how is a two car complete ground-up rebuild and engine swaps going to go?
I wish you luck dude, because I get the feeling that given the chance without the distractions you might actually do something cool with it all.

Because I've decided that it gets done when it gets done. 3 months, 3 years, whatever. My biggest mistake on the sub enclosures was offering them to other people. This is going to be done by me, for me, and it will be prioritized where it belongs in the grand scheme of things. My kids love the cars and they love to "help", so I'm going to take this opportunity to spend time outside with them, teaching them tools and "righty-tighty, lefty-loosey".
So your saying it will never be done!

i think youve made a wise choice. a LSX powered 2nd/3rd gen would make for an AWSOME DD car as well. thats what i eventually want to be my DD, LSX 3rd gen. youre 84 is a GSL isnt it? or it has a GSL rearend IIRC. what i would do is swap the engine and all as you have planned. if you have the funds for it id also swap all the T2 brakes over to the FB with the respeed kits. awsome stuff, i have full T2 on my SA. sweetass stuff! if youre strapped for cash though, the GSL rearend would be fine as long as you didnt try using drag slicks or drive the **** out of it. if you wanted to stay with 4x110 but improve the rearend, email respeed about a special set of moser axles in 4x110.
good luck!
good luck!

Well, here's the progress I've made so far.
Just so you have an idea of the surface crap I've got to clean up, here's what the front end looks like:
Here's my lovely 23 year old radiator, which is just going to be junked... I already have a replacement:
I removed the passenger fender first, there was a wicked mouse nest tucked behind it. I have a nice replacement fender for after I POR-15 everything. I had originally painted the strut holder to match the RB spring, but it's just too ricey, so I'm going to sand it back down and POR-15 it black.
Here's Mayhem guarding the tools:
And if you look closely, you'll see Phantom under the car, coppin' some shade:
I'm going to try to get the rest of the front panels off today, then the suspension is coming back off to be completely de-skanked. My goal is to have the car completely cleaned up and undercarriage painted and nice by the end of the summer. I'm going to try the POR-15 "Marine Clean" stuff later, supposedly it kicks the crap out of grease and grime.

Oh yeah, if anybody in the RI/CT/Mass area wants the 12A and/or 5 speed when I pull them, they can be had... The 12A ran fine the last time it was run (1 1/2 years ago...) but has been sitting with no exhaust manifold for about a year. It would be a good rebuild/parts motor.

Time for the first question.
See these holes?
I was thinking about putting some of that expanding foam stuff from Home Depot in there, to help keep random things out of there... Mice, bugs, whatever.
Is that a good idea?

I foamed the widebody when I had it stripped down. Used something like 45 can of Great Stuff. Short answer, don't do it. I creates too many pockets/voids to hold moisture/water and can potentially accelerate rusting.
There is a proper body foam that can be used, but it's something like 15 bucks a can, and you know how cheap us 1st genners are, lol. The other reason not to use off the shelf foam is most of it's aerobic, meaning it needs exposure to air to chemically react and set, not good for void filling. There are anaerobic foams, but most of those are 2 part foams, that come in separate containers and mix in the gun during application. These foams can get pricey, but if one fills the entire car, it's cheaper in the long run than buying the canned foam.
There's a 2 part foam that we used when I was rehabbing railroad cars. Comes in 2 containers about the size of a BBQ propane tank. I believe it is a closed cell anaerobic foam and may be the best choice, if you can find it.
The automotive foam has 2 functions. It not only quiets the structure, it also strengthens is. Iirc, you may be able to buy single cans of foam at the Ford dealership, my autobody paint supplier also carries it.

That's what I had figured, so I'm glad I asked. I guess I'll just settle for doing the POR-15 everywhere visible and getting it cleaned up.
