One Rare 1985 GSL-Se I believe

Question:
I just purchased a 1985 gsl-se. I already have two and have been searching for a real original for 7 years. At any rate the lady I found has had it 21 years since she was 45 years old (66) now and said it was special ordered. Leather minus power steering. Special paint. It has 54,000 original miles and looks and smells new. If I could fit it my living room I would. It still smells new. My question is this? I went to verify the paint codes for 1985 and mine is paint code H1 Sparkling Black Metallic. It almost looks like dark green and black. It is beautiful. I don't see that paint code offered for a 1985 Rx-7. Anybody else know anything. I know it's a Mazda color just can't figure out if it really was special ordered just for that car. Thanks, Michael

I cant help you with the paint, but I know what you mean about the smell.

My buddy got a hold of an 84 GSL-SE that only had 25-30K miles on it.It was tan with a brown interior...BARF!!!.... but when you sat in it,it smelled and felt like a new car.The bummer was that the whole frontend was wrecked beyond repair,so he parted it out.....

Cool H1 Paint Code

I bought my 85 GSL-SE in 1994 from the original owner with 53k miles on it. It had the Sparkling Black (metalic) paint and no power steering. Depending on the viewing angle and light hitting it will cause the color to shift to green almost then shift back to black. If it is in good shape it is a "one of a kind" color in my opinion. It has been my daily driver for 12 years. I recentley had her re-painted by a friend for her 20th birthday and although I had it painted the same color the effects are not the same. I'm assuming it's the difference between acryllic and poly paint technologies. It's more of a charcoal black vice the green/black of the original paint job. The only reason it had to be re-painted was due to two instances (1995 & 2002) of paint over-spray at work. And an over-zealous detailer taking the clearcoat off when removing the over-spray because he thought the metalflake in the paint was the over-spray too. Over the years the hood and roof paint was starting to oxidize so my baby needed a paint job. You have a rare find indeed, enjoy it.

Here's a link verifying the paint code. Sounds like a nice find. I just bought a 49,000 84 SE from the 2nd owner. It's in excellent condition...so I know how you feel right now. Enjoy!

My 85 GS was sparkling black. It's a nice color, but as mentioned above, will dull and fade with sun and age.

I'll go shoot some photos and post them if I can figure out how. Thanks for the info on the paint code. I've had a black gsl-se before as well just a different paint code. Love those cars. Most troulble free cars I've ever owned.

I bought a 83 Porsche 944 with no maintenance history. What a money pit It's fine now.
I sold a 84 GSL-SE to a kid 6 years ago and bought it back a couple of months ago in a flash when he called and said he was going to university and had to sell it.
Anyone need a 944? That SE was never a problem to me or the kid who had it and looked after it well, thank God, for 6 years.

My 84GS was also black, although it didnt have much sparkle left to it by the time I took possesion.

The black/green metallic color you described in the first post sounds a lot like the paint used for the special Infini FC's in Japan....now thats a cool color.

H1-Sparkling Black, coolest OEM color made, even better than Beat Black from the SAs. I've still got two tubes of H1 touch-up for my FB, I wonder if they're any good yet. No special order was required when the color was new though...
