oil in spark plug holes

85 gsl 12a....i just installed this used motor, it seems to make ok compression, although the rear rotor doesnt' seem to make as much as the front....anyways

in the last couple weeks, after getting everything hooked up, it has only ran twice for about 10 seconds each time. i had to shut down due to fumes, plus i had 2 major leaks. one from the oil cooler, and also i never installed o rings on the intake, because i didn't know there was supposed to be any, so coolant was leaking out onto the block and probably also into the combustion chambers...

anyways now that you know some background.....i pulled the spark plugs in the meantime to make sure they aren't fouled with fuel, and to clean them up, and i noticed there was engine oil on them....not so much on the tips, but around the body of the plug....almost like a thin film....it only seemed to be on the bottom plugs the most. now i know there should be some lubrication in the combustion chamber from the premixing (i am premixing), but so much that you can actually see it on the plugs? or could this just be from the engine being turned over and over and over, and messing with it without it running? hopefully when i get that gasket and o rings on the intake, i will run it and maybe it will burn off.....but just wondered if this was normal.....(sorry for long post. holy)

Nick..if you had the Plugs out and you were rolling the engine over..it could be a little mix of fuel and oil..from inside the rotor housings, just gettin pushed out ..Clean up the Plug Hole Area with a rag..and clean the plugs off ..RIGHT NOW,it is anyone's guess as to what actually is goin on ..YOu should get the gasket and O-rings Clean it up and Try it again..It will give you a better Idea Then..(by the way It's great to hear that you got the engine Swapped over and Goin though..Congratulations..)

yeah thanks buddy....hopefully its just all the buildup from turning it over, but not running it. hopefully it will all burn off, and then the only oil that will be in there/burning will be the mix of 2 stroke i poured in the gas tank. we'll see

Since you don't have the o rings in there, maybe its just coolant/carbon that looks like oil?

If I was throwing a used motor in my car, there's two things I would do once it was running.

1. Replace 1 or 2 quarts of oil with Lucas oil stabilizer. This will help get the seals in good shape again, and this stuff really "crawls" around much better than plain oil does. I believe it does a better job of lubing the hard to reach areas.

2. One can of Seafoam with 1/8 tank of gas, then run it hard. This should clean it out and free up the apex seals. Did wonders for my engine when it had 190,000 miles on it. A few miles down the road and suddenly a Huge! burst of power that has never gone away.

Good luck with your current issues.

thanks for the hints...but i know it is oil. its real fresh, as i have run the engine, and flushed the oil a couple times already, definately not the coolant. that's why im a little worried. i'll find out saturday, when i get my new gasket and o rings on, so i can finally run the engine for more than 10 seconds and really get a feel for what's up with it. at least in the meantime, im elimenating several things that could cause problems, such as the emissions being removed, the new oil cooler o rings, all good hoses, and the new intake gasket and o-rings. hopefully she'll run well!!!! i've been waiting almost a year since i bought this thing, and its been a real low budget job, but im pretty surprised as to how far the car has come, and how little i've spent overall.

here are the basics on the mods and stuff done to it

85 gsl repainted yellow w/270,000kms
stock 12a 160,000kms just installed (fingers crossed)
all emissions removed except still running stock cats, soon to be replaced with flow through
stripped nikki carb (stupid secondaries are stuck)
racing beat duel outlet headers (not installed yet)
15" enkei mesh wheels, black with polished 3" lip.
195/50/15 front tires, 205/50/15 rear tires
eibach/ground control coilovers front, 350lb, and rear 175lb with deadwound coils
aftermarket 13" steering wheel, black and yellow
ractive pedals w/yellow rubber inserts
ractive shift ****, carbon fibre weave insert
momo T2000 racing bucket seat (still need rails, and/or sliders to install)
195/50/16 tires for front, 205/50/15 for the rear

still waiting on a forum member to make sure the other 2 wheels im purchasing aren't out of round, hopefully i will have those wheels in the next month to match the 2 fronts, seat still needs to be installed, rear springs are in, fronts not installed yet, and the carb issues are holding me back from driving the car right now, even though my DD has died...this is my only car so im doing my best to get her going. plus i until saturday i won't know for sure how well this engine is gunna run. we'll see, from what i heard when it ran those 2 short times, it was smooth, no hesitation, but that's no guarantee yet

car stereo equipment not installed yet
alpine cda 7897 head unit
mb quart 3 way competition crossovers (part of a very expensive front stage set, but i don't have speakers yet)
m.a. audio m1686i 6 channel amp. 4x100 will run the front stage and rear fill, then 2x200 will run some mid-bass speakers in the rear. planning on another m.a. audio sub amp to run 2 15" in a sealed enclosure. (when i can afford it)....its all about money

but not so bad in my opinion i don't believe i've spent even $2000 total yet. i've have to add it up
