oil leak problem
84 gsl-se, i did a search on the subject and the symtoms sound like a cracked oil cooler. so i have a few questions on fixing it. First, where exactly is it located? and people said that an older first gen cooler would fit and work, but would one from a second gen be swappable? there is a junk yard with a 79-83 and three decent conditioned second gens.
thanks

The oil cooler on 84 and 85 is in front of the radiator, it is just as large as the rad but about 6 inches high. I've read that most leaks are on the hose fittings. Even if the oil cooler itself is cracked, you can have it repaired by anyone who knows how to weld aluminum.
The oil cooler on my 83 was right under the oil filter, real small, can't imagine this cooler to be as efficient as the front mounted ones, but maybe more reliable. Anyway I've said everything I know, hopes this helps

French Rx7, I think you have that backwards.
The '84-85 cars *also* have the oil cooler under the oil filter.. it is the 79-80 ones that have the "mini rad" oil cooler mounted by the front rad.
Sabbath-7, I believe any oil cooler from an '81-85 car will be a bolt-on affair. Given that you can find a first gen with the "bee-hive" oil cooler under the oil filter. Your oil cooler may not need to actually be replaced. I would check the rubber "o"-rings between the cooler and filter (or is it cooler and pipes... or both... you'll have to check with someone on that). These o-rings are known to dry out and leak.
As for swapping the radiator-style '79 oil cooler into a later-model car.... it takes a bit of work, but with a bit of searching you can find people who've done it. TJ has, check his cardomain site:

That's all the help *I* can offer, do a few more searches with the new info and see what you can come up with
Good luck
