That's why I started the thread to find out what kind of differences, if any, between tall and short filters. But we're getting contradicting replies saying taller will give a better filtration due to more volume while others saying it doesn't matter just the quality counts. Hmm I might have to do some real world tests and see if I find any difference in engine temp or oil pressure between tall vs. short

Real world tests like this:

?

BTW, anyone have a Fram part number for the larger filter? I DO NOT use Fram filters, but Wal*Mart SuperTech (Champion Labs) filters use the same part numbers.

All of my vehicles use 3593A's I buy them by the case.

Look at independent lab testing and industry standards. Like I said, if your oil filter isnt giving you that info, then it's crappy and you need to find another. Great point about the anti-drain valve DOCTOR

Pele, crossreference the Fram PH2849. It is the same size as Napa Gold 1347. It's the tall filter that fits our cars.

That was a very interesting read. I will have to say though that from my own personal experience, I've found Pennzoil filters to be better than the Fram filters. I used to work at a Lube Shop and when we stabbed the filters to disable the anti-drainback valve, I found we always got much more oil out of the Pennzoil filters than the Fram filters. It seems as though a taller filter of the same quality will be better due to the greater surface for the filter element. Anyone else agree or have more input?

Interesting thread!

I happen to use a Purolater 14459 which is the bigger version of either the 14610 or 14612 (which the FD's use). The -59 is all Ive used since Ive had the car, and no problems to speak of, even revving 8grand every so often.

If anthing is bigger than this for a 12A Im not yet aware of it.
My old boss swore by having a larger oil filter, and even larger oil pan. I think he had like 7 or more quarts of oil in his 500hp mustang.

As long as flow and filtration quality are there, I'm happy with a smaller filter, because that is less oil required to fill the engine. And less used oil to dispose of (Which makes my enviormentalist girlfriend happy )

Unless you just dump it somewhere, most places you take used oil actually have it recycled. Save up enough of it and they will actually pay you to take it away

Here is a Napa gold 1347 on a beehive. It fits. There is enough room.

I would never have fit one on my 83 S because it had the AC line run right over the top of the filter, and it didn't like to move

Yeah mine never worked either but I was hoping to one day recharge it. That never happened. Oh well, my 79 S has working AC already filled with R134A woot!
