Oil cooler leak, but this is different......

I know I know, you guys are gonna tell me to do some searching!!! But I did and it doesn't seem to be the same.
I have an 82 with the front mount OC and it's leaking from where the lines meet the cooler........... and I read it's the "bungs" that crack and leak but I replaced the whole cooler with a good looking one and it stopped leaking for a while but now the leaks back. Our first fix was to take the copper washers out and tighter her down and it worked for about 500 miles but now it dripping but not too bad. It drips about one drop every 10 seconds or so. Enough to really bug me.
Ok, I'm pretty sure it's not the "bungs". It it just seeping through the threads????? Theres gotta be a cheap simple fix for that!!!!!

You want to put on new crush washers..I fear that by taking them off and tightening it down may have cracked the bung. Anyway, pull the lines and look for cracks..reinstall new crush washers and put the lines back on. See if that helps. Sometimes a crack in the bung is nearly invisible, so just because you don't see the crack, doesn't mean that it isn't there!

Yeah, I have to agree with GSL-LE...

If you torqued it down hella tight when you put on the new oil cooler you could have cracked it there. I've noticed that these coolers are very fragile in terms of this. I had the same issue with my 82's FMOC and replacing the crush washers actually increased the crack, and we went to specification torque.

You might have cracked this one too if you did it without a crush washer...

Best case? New washers and you're good.. worst?

Replace the FMOC or do what I did and find someone to TIG weld the crack for you.

I think I might have a guy to weld it if it's cracked.......... that sucks big time. I'll try new washers, I don't know where I'll get em............. After welding it'll be stronger than it was brand new!!!! Thats kinda a plus????? lol

get them from the Mazda dealer..or Atkins, Mazdatrix, etc. If you had an old one, you could bring it in to a local NAPA and see if they have anything

I think that if you are going to take your cooler to have a crack welded then it is worthwhile having both bungs built up on the sides with weld at the same time. I had mne done this week and it certainly seems to strengthen the whole area significantly.

I was just thinking, If I can find the crack why couldn't I just put some JB weld on the outside of it, NOT THE INSIDE........... do ya think it'd hold??????

It might for a while but I doubt it would last long term like the weld would... I had to have a crack welded up on one of mine years ago lasted a good long time, but after sitting for a few years (rebuilding the car) it started leaking again... The oil coolers work great but are very fragile as the others have said, very annoying...

Sounds good, just make sure the surface is spotlessly clean before putting the JB on there otherwise you just wasted your time
