OEM muffler Inlet ID

Can someone please tell me what the inlet size is for the OEM muffler? Im shopping for a magnaflow to replace the OEM muffler, and all they offer is a 2.25" or 3" inlet. I thought the OEM muffler had a 2.5" inlet, but not sure.

If a 2.25" inlet wont fit with the OEM midpipe, can anyone recommend a muffler that will? Im looking for a single outlet exhaust, not dual tip.

really? Wow then Im totally confused now. Why do the RB mufflers have a 2.5" inlet? Can anyone post a picture of the OEM midpipe? How exactly does it connect to the muffler? I just bought a new muffler with a 2.25" inlet.

True, The muffler has a 2.5" inlet, but it flares inward at the flange a bit to adapt.

Here is my OEM 1980 muffler (I know its missing the SS tips in this shot). Notice the step down at the muffler from 2.5" to what I believe is 1.75". The over the axle connecting pipe is pretty darn thin. Yet RB swears theres no power gain to be had... I feel a 2" or 2.25" would be ideal for power. You want the exhaust to start larger toward the engine and taper down an inch or so in the rear.

Awesome, thanks very much, that clears up a lot of my confusion. Thats a good point you bring up about the connecting pipe. You'd think that someone would make a wider aftermarket option. I have yet to see any company offer a replacement connecting pipe.
