O Rings/Oil Cooler

Hey,

Is it totally neccesary to undo the banjo pipe to replace the O rings that are under the cooler?

Just that I've been trying to undo the bolt for a few days and it aint going anywhere, and I can't get a socket on it due to it being right up against the firewall.

I've disconnected the inlet & outlet hoses, got the new rings from Mazda ready to go. It is really annoying because the torque on the bolt is very high.

I'm using a 22 & 23mm spanner on it.

Any help is appreciated.

Oh the car is a s3, 1985.

I had the same problem a while back, its a 23mm box end wrench i was trying to use but still no luck... The way i finally got it off was by taking the whole oil cooler off attaching the wrench and jumping on it... Hows that for mechanic skills? Good luck

oh sorry forgot to answer your question... I think you can change the o-rings without taking the banjo off... But i warn you now its gonna mean skinned knuckles and alot of swearing... Undo the 2 10mm bolts holding the oil cooler down and life the assembaly up a bit and you should be able to change them if you can get your hands in there. I also have to warn you getting those 2 10mm bolts back on proves to be very difficult I got really mad trying to get myn back on. I then later on read that you can use a little bit of glue or something sticky on your finger to get the bolt to stick then hope like hell you can get it back on. It will take persistance but im sure you can do it!
Good luck

Just remoe the whole thing. If you get the cooler unbolted, and the front fitting off, then the whole assembly can come off. Just be careful not to kink the metal line.

Ok,

Need more help.

I've undone the 2 nuts around the cooler (the mounting nuts I think. But the cooler still wont come undone?

Just how many bolts are holding the cooler to the banjo? do I HAVE to undo the 23mm banjo bolt?

I'll take some pics tonight and post for help because this is really driving me nuts now.

Any help is VERY appreciated.

Carl..what front mount are you talking about?

dammit I need to take some snaps

you will have to undo the pipe coming out of the front of the block, or take the banjo bolt out... it'll be a lot easier if you don't have the AC/PS pump in your way..

the way i had to do it (my oil line was leaking anyways) was cut the oil line to remove the whole assembaly at once... You could probly do it with it still hooked up but prepare for a big mess. Another thing BE CAREFUL removing the pipe from the front of the engine block it will split very easily if you try taking it off wrong. But as i was saying before there is just 2 10mm bolts holding the beehive cooler and i think there may be a 12mm bolt on top (i might be wrong on that one) but it should just pull straight off... Good luck getting the 2 10mm bolts back on like i said before use something sticky on your fingers it helps a ton!
