Now heres a weird tranny problem for ya!

Ok, I think Ive officially had one of the weirdest car problems of my life.
I just got my '85 GS project on the road this morning and it seemed like everything was amazing all day, but then tonight Im cruising along and shift from fourth to neutral, I was lazy and didnt use the gears to slow down and when I went to put it back into gear (first) I noticed a problem.

Moving the shifter **** from its naturally centered position in neutral towards 1/2nd gear, the transmission grinded as if I was pushing the shifter into a gear without touching the clutch.
Before you guys tell me its part of my clutch system, Im sure it wasnt because I was not putting the car into a gear, just moving the shifter to the side in neutral, also I managed to put it into first fine a second later.

I hoped it was just a weird occurance, and went on my way but about 5 minutes later the same thing happened. Now I have no idea what the issue is, or what to do about it because it just seems so weird to me. Does anyone have any idea?

Are you sure your shifter handle isn't loose, as in worn bushings?

Definately something to check, but the shifter feels nice and tight and the car is a low miler. It really felt like something else but I guess its easier to start small.

Since it happened twice I know that the shifter made it into neutral first both times, quite odd I must say, these were not flukes.
