No Heat!

Okay, first, I did search, and found nothing.

Anyways, I drove the car for an hour yesterday, but no heat. The Temp guage is not working, so either a wire is broken somewhere, or there is no Thermostat installed (Just bought the car). ALso, the blower Fan wont turn on on any setting. THe car had AC but no longer does. There was some air coming from the vents, but it was the tempeture of the inside of the car. I assume there is something disconnected somewhere, but was wondering if there was a specific place that might be best to start at? I've already checked the fuses under the dash, but didnt look any further. Before I rip part the dash, I wanted to know if there was a simple answer that someone could throw out there before that project begins!

Thanks,

Zach

Hey Zach-
sounds like loose connection(s?). You need to mention the model of RX you have (mine is an 80) as there are some diffs in wiring and heaters in various models. Do you have a wiring diagram? on-line try this site:
http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/cars/rx7/
manuals.html
-without specifics on your car you can try removing some of the instrument covers and checking for loose connectors, but it would be smarter to do this with a diagram on hand, because the problems you are describing might not be physically interconnected. By that I mean: if your list of inoperable components DON'T share a common connector somewhere, then its more likely it is NOT a loose connection. The diagrams show the routing of power thru connections so you can see if your failed pieces share a common connection somewhere. That way you are not tearing the whole dash apart to try checking connections.
Here is an example (based on how my 80 is wired!):
-you say the fan motor doesn't work. Well the switch for this is wired in right behind the center panel. You COULD remove the center panel and check its connection BUT
-you also say the temp gauge isn't working in the instrument cluster. This is wired to one of two big harness connections on the rear of the cluster (so it is not a separate wire and connector for the temp gauge). The fact your FUEL gauge is working (?) which also goes thru the same harnesses, suggests those rear harnesses are likely OK.
-the fan switch is actually attached to a SUB harness that connects all the center and passenger-side electricals. This SUB plugs into the MAIN harness that includes the instrument connections and all the relays, etc for the whole car. A second SUB from the rear attaches to it then the MAIN runs thru the firewall into the engine compartment. You can see where the Wiring Diagram is handy!
Sorry I couldn't be more specific-

Thanks for the reply buddy..

You were right, the actual wire to the fan controller was disconnected, simply unplugged. The fan blows now, which is nice.

My new thing is that the Heat Guage is indeed working, but the car is not heating up all the way, from what I can tell. It moves to roughly 1/4 inch up and stays steady. I figure there must be a problem with the Thermostat, like its not there, or is staying open. Or, I guess my Radiator cap could be bad and not holding pressure, right?

1983 GS, with an apparent 1984 Motor and trans. Assuming a 12A motor.
