newbie distributor question

I searched, honest

Over the weekend, I plan to replace my plugs, wires, dizzy cap & rotor. The plug wires have some corrosion inside the boots, so I figure a $60 tuneup won't hurt.

I was wondering if I need to set the timing mark on the main pulley before removing the rotor, or will it be okay to just remove it and replace with the new one. Also, if anyone has some advice on what to watch out for I would appreciate the help. This is my first time inside a distributor, so I'm just trying to cover all the bases before I get started. '84 GS stock. Thanks!

The timing is adjusted by the nut at the bottom of the dist mounting where it goes into the block. When you change the cap and rotor you will not affect anything.
Make sure you get ngk plugs only, when you install them put a small amount of anti seize compound on the threads. you do not have to gap them, they are preset.
Recommend ngk wires, no generic brand.
Good cap and rotor either made by echlin or bosch or the dealership.
The best thing to do when replacing wires is to do them one at a time. The dist cap is marked for which one goes to which plug. t1 meaning trailing or top hole which is located on the upper left, t2 on the upper right and so forth.
I always recommend this to everyone, buy a haynes manual, it has all the basic
maintenance procedures in their and you can always use it for reference.
Just take your time with it and don't be afraid to do the work. Happy wrenching

The rotor is keyed, it will only go in one way. Check your timing when you have all of the new parts in place.
