New poster, New mechanic, New RX-7

hey all!!
i have been lurking for a couple weeks now as i was negotiating an RX7
well i got it, a 1982 GX (GSL in canada)

its in pretty good shape, some rust on the wheel wells, and an oil leak. (not sure where yet, but probably one of the bad ones)

I am about to do the new car stuff, new cap rotot plugs , oil etc...

i have noticed the car seems to be A. running rich, and B. lacking some power.

you think new plugs and cap/rotor will be the major fix? or is there something else on the RX i should be looking at? like teh carb ?

as i say i am fearless, but ignorant on these cars so i ahve been reading the haynes book and this site heavily.

I haven't declared a side in teh Dino/Synth Oil Holy War, but its goign to be Dino til i figure out how bad that oil leak is

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new purchase!

Being fearless is half the battle. lol

Take it one step at a time..... I'd say give 'er a good basic tune-up with plugs, cap, wires, filters, fluids, etc before digging into other possibilities. For the oil leak, I'd check the O-rings under the oil filter and the oil metering pump. Those are two mostly like places.

Good luck!

Congrats! I agree with inittab on basic tune up. Definately change the fuel filter as well, then fill up and add MMO to the gas and oil (unless you cant get it up there). Carb probably needs a good hose down too. Once thats done then you can further explore the lack of power-- if its still there. Good luck, dont be shy, its just a car and there is plenty of info here.

thanks

thanks guys in doign the repair i have a new problem now

Heating COoling system questions
So i changed my oil in my new (to me) 1982 GX (GSL)

new plugs , cap rotor etc. i take it around the block and there is some power that wasnt there but still seems a little sluggish.

Anyway i parked
10 mins later i start it up and the temp gauge, which hadn't gotten above 50c is suddenly pushing redline.

I shurt off and check my coolant level, and Voila! the Rad's bone dry.

so i limp the car 2 blocks and fill the rad
just as i am about to add my 2nd litre the 1st had filtered to the engine and proceeded to vent into the engine compartment and boil off.

the location of the leak is under the oil filter,
either it is this T joint where one hose goes from the engine into the heater, and the other half of the T has a hose cap on it (not a technical term, but its a piece of hose that is sealed off and its clamped on like a hose)

so my questions are :

1.) is this a common problem that there is an obvious thing to look for and fix?

2.) is this more likely a unseated hose, or something worse and potenitally fatal to the rotary?

any help would be good. I have looked at my Haynes book and a couple online shop manuals and i cant get a good picture or diagram of that side of the motor, or get a decent idea how coolant flows through tthe engine.

it seems to be holding oil, but it is leaking. It looks like the previous owner siliconed along the seem on each side of the housing withthe oil filler cap.

any ideas or suggestions as to what or where i should be looking for the problem?

i had the same issue...sounds like the heater hose...change both out along with your upper and lower rad hoses since you don't know the age...also check/change your oil pedastal o-rings...if these are leaking it will cause the leak again...

can you take some pix?

dino juice

it is an rx7 so it uses the oil as a lubricant. stick with the dino.. maxda does not recommend synth. I have never had an oil leak.. and had 5 of them.. it is rare i think
