Talking New owner... Racing beat question.. hehe...

Hey guys, I just purchased a PRISTINE 85 RX7 GS with 54K on the odometer... Well, she just went through emissions with flying colors, so now it's time to play... What is the general opinion of the "street port" exhaust system that racing beat sells?

Dan

Lets just say Racing Beat is the name to trust for rotary exhaust . Another you could consider is Mind Train, but anyone else is garbage as far as Im concerned.

EDIT: I just got all my RB stuff recently, and the quality of everything is very good. It looks built very well, if not overly well. It seems that it would last about a hundred years, lol .

I have the street port exhaust on my car. The only possible downside is that its heavy as hell.

Dan,
If you're talking about the long-primary system, that is, the system with two seperate pipes and presilencers that don't get collected until right before the muffler, that system is designed to work with street-ported motors and if used on a stock-port motor will provide little or no power increase. A header that is collected early will move the torque peak down, which is desirable on stock motors.

I'm sorry to hear that RB seems to be flaking on you, 1.1. Especially since I now find myself needing to come up with a Racing Beat header for my '80. What the hell is RB thinking, that they don't have a friggin' 12A header IN STOCK? Outrageous! -WG

I disagree. The power increase on my stockport was pretty great.

Even Racing Beat says "This system can also be used on non-ported engines with significant results."

Yeah I'd say just the fact that you are removing an 18 year old exhuast with three clogged cats and replacing it with a free breathing system should provide a "little" power increase. I would think. On your behalf, however, i have been told that the dual pipe "long primary" system does not provide enough back pressure to open the 5th and 6th ports on the -SE. But if you've got a 4 port motor does not apply. I think I'm leaning toward the single pipe for my SE. I have a feeling that my current exhust is pretty constipated and in need of a RB enema. Should feel pretty sweet.

Right on.

We have the street port exhaust sitting around waiting to be installed...

It's so heavy... Shipping from RB to Michigan was over $60!

I put the RB regular exhaust (separated to the end of the header only, presilencer, & powerflow muffler) on my car and she was a completely different beast - gobs of power NOW, not "when I manage to push through these old cats I'll get back to you with some acceleration"...

I was referring to the comparison of the long-primary
system with the regular (early-collected) system, NOT a stock exhaust. OF COURSE one will see a power increase with ANY header setup over stock. By the way, I HAVE a long-primary system that I bought complete with a 13B header out of a junkyard for $35 bucks! My short-primary system is torquier. My 1986 Racing Beat catalog says "Conversely, if the two pipes are not collected until just before the muffler, there will be a distinctly metallic character to the exhaust, noise will increase, and the power increase will be the same or slightly higher."
Now, RB has a vested interest in selling product, so OF COURSE they are not going to say you won't get a power increase over the cheaper, (and lighter!) short-primary system with a stock-port motor. Additionally, any power increase realized will be in the extreme upper end of the powerband.

ummm... just to point out... if you just passed emissions with flying colors, you might not next year with the RB system. don't get me wrong... i love RB stuff, but they don't check emissions here either.

Snarf!

Dan is buddies with a few techs at inspection stations, so emmissions isn't a big deal. Having smog gear just saves him a few cases of beer.

Does anybody know anything about the Mindtrain exhaust?

I'll also be in the market for a full exhaust soon. Assuming I ever get my lazy *** in gear and finish my '83 (which only needs radiator and carb).

I have that metalic sound,
I have the long primary system but with a n1 sytle muffler on the back. below 3000k it sounds like a hog.

I had the street port exhuast on the stock motor, and it made a pretty big difference over the thermal reactor exhuast.. Sounds and performs great on my street port as well.
