New junker e-fan, woohoo!

I was inspired by this thread:
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=194975

So I went to the junkyard today, determined to find a suitable fan. I took iotus's advise from the aformentioned thread and found a 91 Ford Taurus with a 3.8 V6 and yanked the fan.

$15 later I was home ripping out the old clutch fan. Once it was out, I placed the shroud of the old fan over the new one to determine where to drill for mounting holes and to see if anything would need to be cut.

The corners need to be cut to clear the lower water pump pipe and make it easier to slip into place. Once that was done(with a roto zip- I love that thing!) I zip tied the fan in place.

Now, one question. I grounded the fan at the coil bracket bolt, and took to hot off of the coil. Bad idea? I was basicaly looking for a "on" switched point, without having to run it through the firewall. I plan on puting a 10A fuse in the hot wire, will this be suficient? I'm pretty new as far as wiring is concerned, so and help is apreciated.

Now with the hood up and the key on, I can feel the breeze this baby puts out. I wired it on low, and may wire the high wire to a switch so I can manually kick it up if needed.

Thanks iotus for the great help in the earlier thread!

Well, the trailing coil is a BAD place to wire to. I went to take it for a test run, and as soon as it starts up, the tach goes dead. So now the big question is, where to wire it to? I looked for the cig ligter wire in the engine bay, but no luck there. I have the Mazda wiring diagram, so where should I go from here.

Plus there is now a rattle coming from god knows where. I think I dropped a bolt somewhere on the engine pan that I need to go find now. Great another late night project.

I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow!

I ended up running the wiring through the firewall and hooked it up to the sterio power at the fuse box. It works great!

Has anyone else experianced a weird rattle after removing their clutch fan? All the bolts are accounted for, and I have no idea what it is. It increases with rpm, and sounds like its coming from where the old fan used to be. Does anything else come of other than the fan and the plate it bolts to?

When you took off the plate the fan bolts to, did you replace the studs on the water pump pulley with bolts, or use some washers and nuts? It sounds like you didn't get your water pump pulley bolted down right.....

Hmmmm. What kind of rattling is this? Could it be similar to a heat sheild or skid pad rattle? perhaps teh radiator supports? If not, make sure all those pulleys are on right!!!!

Give that man a cigar! That was the problem, it's funny how water pumps work better when their pullies are actually attached to them. Anyway thanks for the help.

I have a Taurus e-fan too....I haven't installed it yet, I still need to buy a relay, but I hooked it up to my battery just to see how it moved, and damn it moves a lot of air.
