NL New guy here....82 Rx sitting for ALONG TIME!

My brother has a 82 rx7. It has been sitting for ALONG time....to the tune of 10 plus years. I plan on taking it and making it back into the car is should be. In order to fire up the motor, what needs to be done. I know the trans was bad, but as far as I know, the motor at the time of outdoor storage was fine.

shes in rough shape atm but I plan on rebuilding it...new interior, widebody, suspension, upgraded brakes, some power adders.....maybe a 13b turbo. I am handy with a wrench, I modded LOTS of cars, worked on a alcohol injected civic etc.

just not up on rotorays.....I have a 2007 mazda 5 in the stable as well...

thanks for the guidance!

welcome to the forum, as a usual tip, hit the FAQ page, and use the search function of the forum...now, to get it started it's not different than any car, you know just do the usual, renew all fluids as well as plugs and wires, make sure no wires are corroded (specially around battery cables and stuff) change filters, i recommend before trying to turn it, to squirt some MMO or seafoam into the chambers (sorry, i meant into the housings through the spark plug holes, like Fordsucks2 said :P)give it that bit of lube since it has sit for a long time and it's probably dried out, and the seals are probably a bit stuck i'm sure, get the seals nice and soaked, and then fire her up. make sure no hoses are broken or brittle, specially the oil feed lines.

I have an 80 RX7 that was sitting since 1992. I did some research and found out that pouring marvel mystery oil into the spark plug holes, a sort of "priming" is help in getting old rotarys to fire up..successfully. When I did mine, I changed the oil, poured the marvel mystery oil in (not filling them up, but a liberal amount), with fresh spark plugs and it took two attempts before she started up. I am still rolling on the same engine with no problems.

I'm sure some of the pros in this forum have something to add, I hope this helps.

Stick with the seafoam don't try oil's or ATF till normal fails. Fresh gasoline is critical drain the lines if you can too.

Ok,

Sounds like I should get it going then. as long as everything is sorted. I do not have access to seafoam. is there anything similar I can use thats easily available through most outlets? I hope to have it going by the time hes back onshore in 4 wks. I would love to see his face when I drive up to his house in it.

I got a Rotary Engineering engine from a friend who had not started it since 1985 (this was last spring). I had him pour MMO through every hole he could find; intake, spark plug, and exhaust and let it sit for a week. With the plugs out it turned over with an 8" wrench on the flywheel pulley. I put it into a second gen. and have put nearly 10K miles on it as my DD. MMO also helped me store a 79 for almost eleven years with no damage to the engine rotors, housings, or seals --- GREAT Stuff!
