New guy has a few questions...

I bought an 83 rx7 about a week ago for $500. The car runs and isnt in all that bad of shape. This is my second 7 but I am still learning these strange beasts. My first RX7 is an 87 that I bought for 300 and still is sitting in my garage torn apart but thats another story.

1st question:

Should I be driving this car? It has a blown apex seal on the front rotor. I tested it by removing the spark plugs on each rotor and listening while it was being cranked. Back rotor = pow pow pow pow pow pow
Front rotor = pow ---- ---- pow ---- ---- pow

the car runs but backfires through the carb occasionally and has barely any power. I drove it 500 miles like this on the freeway....floored would get me to about 70 and no more.

2nd question:

Are these cars quick? I mean...how fast are they when they are running right? I'm wondering if this car is really worth fixing or if I should just junk it. Its virtually impossible to find motors for these things or even parts in general. I found one motor in unknown condition within 500 miles and they wanted $900 for it.

What should I do?

You can try to unstick the bad seal in the endine (might just be carbon lock-up)...
(search ATF Trick or MMO Trick)

Nobody here is gonna tell you to junk it... We love our 1st gens. They're not SUPER quick stock, but with a few cheap mods they can be...

parts are pretty easy to find. engines are easy too. In fact, I have an extra engine sitting around. Its street ported... I'll leave that to the for sale section.

My mom lives in Clovis where I lived also until I joined the air force. I'm currently in tech school in Biloxi MS but am graduating soon and Ill be heading back to clovis for a month or so for leave. After that Ill be heading to Osan AB South Korea for a year. Anyway....

I like this car but man I wish the motor was not broken. If I don't sell it (already got some offers) I may try to fix it. I need to get my 87 fixed as well. One of the freeze plugs on the front of the motor went and that caused all the coolant and oil to mix. The car runs and drives but I only drove it a little for fear of making things worse on a good running engine. I was at home over Christmas and stripped the motor down but couldn't get the front nut off to get the front housing off to get to the freeze plug. Do any of you guys have any tips for getting that nut off?
