more likely heavier rotors limited RPM. With each generation of rotary engine Mazda finds new methods of manufacturing to create lighter and lighter rotors, meaning less mass to spin and higher possible RPMs.

Which is why I can't wait to see how many revs a Renesis can do. That motor is going to be sweet.
As for the original topic, which was somewhat derailed by our resident troll, I have a personal affection for the 12A, as I've owned two 12A cars. As far as money goes, getting a good carb setup and the RB exhaust would net you some good power, even on stock ports with not too much investment. With a car as light as the RX-7, even 140 hp can kick you in the pants. Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the community.

hey guys, its nice to see a RX-7 board thats devoted to first gens & the other gens. i just purchased my 83 last week. having a few probs with it starting wise but its in the shop. my main concerns are is if a 12A is worth modding or just to swap over to the 13B?
also which manuals do u use when repairing the car -- haynes or chiltons? i used to deal with honda's till seeing the light of having a commuter.thanks for hte help

I would have to say from experience that the best "book" or "manual" for the RX-7 exists right inside this forum. It IS the forum, and it's people. With so many suggestions and ideas, you can't go wrong by listening. Reading a Chilton's or a Haynes manual and not knowing wtf you're doing is not the way to go. Sure all the information on the RX-7 could be in a book, but it'll take some time to learn. Listen to what us members have to say, spend some time viewing the archive of threads. Build up a knowledge of rotary lingo and mechanics before you attempt anything. We're here to help eachother (well most of us) and to learn from others past experience. As for your question about engine choice, I would choose the 13B over the 12A. Spend some time at junkyards. Your gem could be in the rough.
Manuals are good for general reference, and to list order of removal, etc. I'd recomend getting at least one manual, as it will answer a lot of questions on the simple stuff (and some hard stuff like engine rebuilding), the forum is good for further insight, tricks, and most importantly modifications...

thanks for the help guys. soon as i can get the car polished up back to its glory days ill be happy. i still have to clean out the carburator & such with gunk carb cleaner. let alone degrease my whole engine bay. i did get it back today finally. after worrying of a bad alternator & all. it was a simple battery cable giving me the trouble. once again thanks.

i believe the 3rd gen is 7k. the s5 is the only one to come from factory with an 8k redline.
dude, i hate to shatter your egos and all, and so you know ... this is coming from a rotorhead, so it's not a Honda-guy talking! most VTEC's have powerbands that are not too much unlike an N/A rotary.
i've been driving rotaries since '87, stock, turbo, 12A, 13B, stockport, streetport and 1 bridge. i've also had the pleasure of driving VTEC Preludes, Integras and Civics ... the single cam VTEC's are a little on the anemic side, but i'd dare say the twin cams would give a similarly powered rotary a pretty good run any day of the week ...
(of course ... i'd do everything in my power to make sure that "good run" does not turn out to be victory.)
