new fuel pump.. stumbling..

ok so my fuel pump decided to leave me stranded the other day when it died on me... well i replaced it with a holley blue.. now i know that is way too much pressure, so i got a cheapo fpr at autozone... i set it at 5psi at first, drove it about 10 feet... sputtered and died... so i took i tto 3.5 and drove home fine.. then next day i go to start her, and nothing... so i pulled the fuel line off the carb, and no fuel was comming out... so i set it to 5psi again and it held steady. I drove around the city a bit and everything seemed fine. till i got on the high way and could not go over 60mph in 3rd, 4rth, or 5th!!! is the fpr? it was like $25 at autozone. should i take it back and get a holly fpr? or what should i do? (i also replaced my fuel filter while i was under there)

ok so since then i messed with the regulator... check floats, and noticed at 4psi it was barely half full.... now at 5.5psi it is at half... and now at 5.5psi i can go up to 70mph on the high way... iv also noticed that im using WAY more fuel then i did befor the old pump went out... as well as a lack of power..

are the floats properly adjusted? are you confident in the accuracy of this cheap fpr?

Get the Holley FPR from Summit, I had a cheapo one from Pep Boys and it was WAY off, then Josh got one and the inlet was the outlet and vice versa, which crapped out on him after an hour.

How you been man?

DO NOT touch the floats. If they were fine before the pump failed, there's no reason to think they've changed now. Get the Holley 1 to 4-1/2 psi fpr and a decent fuel pressure gauge. Re-Speed sells an excellent one. The local speed shop here sells a fair gauge for 10 bucks that I use. I can't say I fully trust it but I've compared it with other gauges I have and it seems to be accurate. If you want your new Holley pump to last longer, spend the extra bucks and get the Mallory 4309 fpr which has a return port.
