new to fb but not rx7s

well my brother picked up a 1985 gsl yesterday, was an owner of a 91 gxl (had to sell it). 115k on the clock, five speed with a couple new parts. car is in decent shape on the exterior ( crinkle in the driver fender, needs paint job) and the interior still looks pretty good. has one problem that causes it to cut out on hard acceleration and im not good with carbs, im a EFI guy, i need to learn. lol. other then that it runs pretty good, my bro says it feels more peppy and responsive then his last S5. but it was only $750

here is pic of her

Nice find. Definitely check the FAQ page and the Archives for any problems. You have wheels that most FB owner's are dying to get their hands on. I'd ditch that exhaust for a Racing Beat exhaust and get her nice and cleaned up! Welcome to the 1st Gen side of the Darkside

well the guy he bought it from was driving it on a regular basis, highway trips out of town and such, i guess you could say it was almost a daily driver. he said it started doing it recently and said it was a fuel leak at the carb but i dont know. he explained it to my brother and my bro relayed it to me so i dont know the details of what he said. if you have any ideas please let me know.

Those rims are secksey...i'd love to have a set on my 85. Sell those if you can find a set of stockers, you'll get a nice buck or two.

If there is a fuel leak at the carb...then its time for a CRAB rebuild ASAP! the carb rebuild kits run about 30 to 40 bucks depending who you buy it from.....

Wheels are not OEM. They are Epsilons and yes you will get a pretty penny if you sell them. You may even want to try running a can of seafoam through the gas tank and see if it still cuts or not. If you don't want to rebuild the carb yourself you can send it off to be rebuilt and even modified by someone like Sterling. I say get some more pics up

If the car cuts out by stumbling when you first go to full throttle then it is the accelerator pump (enriches mixture by squirting in extra fuel when you first accelerate). If it cuts out after you have been accelerating for a while, but then returns to normal, your fuel pressure is probably too low. You might have a clogged fuel filter or a weak pump. It's also possible that your floats are too low. There's a "sight glass" (basically just a little window) on the carb where you should be able to see fuel halfway up when the car is running. Adjusting the floats is annoying so hopefully it's the fuel filter

i might try to find a used carb at the yard and rebuild that while the car is in use.

what is a conservative figure on a used set of epsilons?

Welcome to the 1st gen section.

In my sig line is a link to the online FSMs, carb manual, etc.

If the carb is leaking externally, it's usually the AP diaphram. Time for a complete rebuild. Yes, there is a lot of crap on the Nikki carbs and they look very intimidating. Biggest problem is R&R, rebuilding the carb isn't bad. If you are not subject to emmisions, and don't plan on keeping it oem pristine, the is a write up in the FAQs on the rats nest removeal. Makes the carb R&R much easier.

Eplsilons, they are one of the most sought after old school wheel and a decent set can bring 600, a pristine set near 1k if you can find the right buyer. I have a set on my widebody, last link in the sig.

yeah i remember seeing your car at the rx7 meet in lawrence last year. your car looks pretty sick. i think my bro is going to keep the wheels on the car as he has plans to repaint and repair it to near mint condition.
