New door panels for $35! *Before/After Pics*
#26
Yeah carbon fibre is cool, but remember the crowd. I did something similar with an FB I had and it turned out pretty good. These are often $500 finds that someone is making into a jewel on a budget. So for the most part, carbon fibre is out. I say, good effort! But, that's just my opinion. Now if this way a $20,000 FD that someone was trying to fab door panels for from the fabric store, it would be a different story.
But to me, what are these door panels for? Purely cosmetic purposes, which aren't that important to me in and of themselves. So if I can get rid of the crappy cracked old black vinyl and replace it with something new and better for less than $40 then I say that's a great day's work! Heck, even buying a pair of equally faded questionable SE door panels on Ebay usually costs about $50-70!!
So, in the end I can fully understand why these may not be appealing to some. But I think that stuff like this speaks to 80-90% of the 1st gen group as they are guys like me who want their car to have almost everything for next to nothing. It's sort of like the GRM $2007 challenge mentality I guess.

Looks good!, I did the same thing in a truck a few years back.
I used black abs plastic. It did make more room, I could lay on the bench seat perfectly between them (5'7") for naps on long trips.
I've also recoverd the vinyl sections on my 85 gs, it was rather difficult.
I diddn't think about the factory stuff being thinner.
I used 3M spray glue and had to redo the drivers side with contact cement.
Maybe not the right type of spray glue?

Door lock pull retainers
Hey all, just a suggestion about the little retainers to keep the door lock pulls in place, if you could find an old Ford Festiva L you could use the little plastic inserts from its doors. The L model had door cards just as you made and little plastic holders for the door lock. They fit perfectly as the Ford Festiva was made by Mazda.

Nice job!
Not to hijack because I do like the custom look...but for those people looking for original type door panels - it is not that bad a job to accomplish, I just bought marine grade (UV treated) black vinyl with virtually identical pattern to stock....

This is quite an old thread, post in the FS section, there are alot of guys parting cars out. It is also important what model you have because of the power windo option.

Sorry, I don't have 'em anymore. Trust me, you wouldn't have wanted them anyway. The vinyl was cracked and rotting. The cardboard on the doors was deformed and decomposing. On top of that, lots of the fasteners were damaged or missing. They wouldn't have been worth anyone's time. That's why I put them out for the garbage men.
If you need some door panels really badly I would recommend checking on ebay every couple of days. I see a lot of pretty decent door panels for sale on their on a pretty regular basis. Good luck with your search!

You should start a thread in the 1st gen non-technical section for your project. The link below will take you to the non-technical section...
https://www.rx7club.com/1st-gen-general-discussion-207/
After you start your own new thread and type in all your text, you'll see a button underneath the typing area that says "Manage Attachments." Click on that and you should be able to upload pictures from your computer. Just make sure the files aren't too big. If the file sizes are too big the forum won't let you upload them. In this case you'll need to resize them somehow so that the files are smaller. You usually need a photo editing program to do this.
Another option for posting pictures is to host them on imageshack. Imageshack gives you free picture hosting and will automatically resize your pictures if you tell it to do so. After you have your pictures hosted somewhere you can use the [ IMG ] tag to insert them in your post. It would be done as so...

Just put the address of your picture in between the tags... Don't use any spaces though...
