New Clutch

Hey i think i am going to be needing a new clutch sometime here soon and i was wondering what brands and sites some people would recommend. I have been looking at the centerforce series 1 clutch. My gsl-se is completely stock, i don't race but would like something quality. I'm not sure how good the stock OEM clutches are since mine was pretty worn when i got the car. I have no idea if anything was been replaced current to me buying the car. Watcha think?

ACT makes a good clutch. I use one in my racer (recommended by mazdacomp) It has a HD pressure plate which takes a little more effort on the foot, but not much, and the disc is regular friction material. Highly streetable.

if you plan on not modifying the car a stock clutch will give you 100K plus! if you do madif y it a little a stock clutch will work, but like Rx7carl said, an act would be much better!!!

the oem clutch from the dealership maybe a bit much though. i think its like $80 for the disc alone. a viable alternative would be the LuK repset. i have one on my gs and ive done one autocross event. its easy engagement makes it highly streetable but has a little bit more friction than the stock.

I'm using the DXD 6puck ceramic racing clutch from www.southbendclutch.com. It's $350 shipped, will hold 500ft-lbs of torque, and the pedal is not any heavier than stock. It's very easy to use and not a problem at all to engage smooth.

If he's not racing it or modding it, then any race clutch or hi-po clutch is a waste of money. A stock replacement clutch kit from Victoria British will do the job and you can drink the savings...

If you plan on any mods in the future that will kick up significant HP, the the CenterForce Dual-Friction clutch is the way to go....bulletproof with the same if not lighter clutch pedal pressure....

I think the VB kit was $187 US....that's for a throw-out bearing , clutch and pressure plate...

I have a Centerforce Stage II in my GF's 85 GS and I wouldnt buy one again. The car only has very basic mods and the clutch cover and flywheel both had bad heat spotting and the clutch just never felt very inspiring... If I were to do it again I would consider another brand like ACT or maybe SPEC (not sure if they have an rx7 model but I put one in my 87 turbo supra and its a very nice unit)

Racing Beat recommends the stock FACTORY Mazda clutch disk if the car is anything less than race, i.e. street applications - this is due to the long performance life and high quality of the stock factory units.

I agree with the poster above who stated that any money spent on an aftermarket 'high performance' clutch is wasted money - it's not going to provide that much additional grip with a stock engine, and usually that added performance comes at the expense of ease of use. That thing is going to get used every day that you drive the car, every time that you shift, and will eventually become a hassle for the extra performance that you're not using.

Any good clutch rebuild should include throw-out bearing, needle bearing, transmission front cover (prone to wear over time leading to sloppy clutch engagement), and Factory disk. Pressure plates usually last a very long time and rarely need to be replaced, IME. I always keep a spare clutch ready to go in the garage for when spare time arrives.

Good luck, and check Mazdatrix for good prices on the factory clutch disks,

that much for a repset? i paid 149.99 + tax for mine at the local pepboys. i did the price match though so that might have helped. but i am happy with the luk clutch. it works great for street use and the occasional adrenaline rush.
