Needle Valve question

Hey everyone,

I'm new to the world of carburated rotaties (Though I've owned several EFI 7s) and I'm having some trouble with an 85 GS I just bought.

The car sat for over 2 years and floods out badly when I start it.

Ive changed the plugs, wires, cap rotor, drained the gas changed the fuel filter, flushed the fuel lines, taken the top hat off the carb and cleaned out the floats etc. and flushed the carb with amsoil powerfoam.

I searched for this problem and found a post that said the ruber tips onm the needle valves can become brittle over time and not seal properly.

I've never changed out needle valves before and was wondering if I need to change the seats at the same time?

Also, any other advise on my flooding problem or changing the needles would be greatly appreciated

Thanks guys

Mark

I had a similar problem and took it to a mechanic to overhaul the carb. For months after, I had on and off flooding problems until I took a close look at the needle tips. One had an almost imperceptable slice on the tip that was causing my problems. Got replacement needles cheap from Advance Auto and no problems since. I can't say if the mechanic replaced the seats or not, but I doubt it.

You probably should remove all the jets and air bleeds. Soak all jets and carb body in carb cleaner. Two years is a long time, and todays gas gums up quickly.

By all means replace the seats when you do the needles.

BTW, a non-functioning float bowl vent can cause weird flooding at start up problems as well.

Thanks for all the replys, guys. I picked up a rebuild kit at the local APS ($30) and it had the seats included. I installed the valves and new seats, flushed the jets and air bleeds with some more carb cleaner, put her back together and she fired right up!! Car has good power, idles perfect and starts right up.

Both valves had very minor bends in the tips. I guess that's all it was.

Same exact thing happened to me only mine had been sitting for at least four years. The lot I bought it from actually showed me the receipt from when they payed some thief to rebuild the carb. Let's just say he didn't even clean it well. Anyway, I couldn't even tell there was a problem with the needles until I looked at them side by side with the new ones. Then just like you said, a very minor bend in the tip of each one was noticeable. Sounds like you found it a hell of a lot sooner than I did though. Congrats, and enjoy.
