Need info: 79 RX Nikki Carb rebuild

I'm having a little problem getting the correct rebuild kit for my car.

I bought new in 78. 12A engine. Original Nikki carb I believe is still on my car. I have had a rebuild once before, and I dont remember ever replacing my carb out, just doing a rebuild.

I want to verify the Nikki is still on it.
Where do i find the number on my carb or determine what carb type i have?

I understand it is easier to build on the car then to remove it..is this correct?

Anyone know the rebuild number for this carb from a 79 limited rx?

AND if I need someone to rebuild for me is there anyone that is recommended from the boards I should get with?

KC

If your carb looks like the one in my signature photo, it's a Nikki.
Just ask your local auto part chain store for a rebuild kit for the rx-7 - the years are the same as far as the kits go. They just add a few extra little gaskets to cover all the different years. There's very minor differences in the airhorn gasket.

There is a number on the driver's side of the front fuel bowl, but you're lucky if you can read it anymore.

I don't know where you heard that rebuilding was easiest done on the car. (That's crazy.)

Rx7Carl and myself do Nikki carb rebuilds and modifications. Visit my site by clicking the photo, and then clicking the larger photo. There are rebuilding tips on the site and her in the FAQ sticky at the top.

Thanks Sterling, I'll go check your site out.

I asked Napa they said there were 3 kits for a 79 rx7 and asked me for the number from my carb..i couldn't give it to them.

Appreciate the info, you may be hearing from me I have never rebuilt a carb before...might be easier to put it in the hands of a pro

Like he said, I only see the numbers after blasting the gunk off the carb body. But the kits should be pretty generic, year wise. The easier on the car came from Felix Miata. That does apply for the later cars with all the emissions blocking any decent access to remove just the carb, so you remove it in stages. Airhorn, main body, then throttle body. I did it that way many years ago on my first rebuild on my 84 and it worked out ok.
