Arrow Need a Hitch for my 1st Gen !!!

Well,

It's looking pretty promising that I will be heading back to South Dakota this May to work on a Ranch for about 4 to 5 months.

I am taking my 85 Rx7, and was wondering if anyone has put a hitch on one of these. I have seen a couple miatas with hitches, but no 1st gens. If you know of where I can get one, besides U-Haul, please let me know. Or if you have one, maybe i can strick a deal.

Thanks
ben

One came on my car when I bought it, but I foolishly eBayed it before I saw it's real value. It was not a Uhaul one but did look mass-produced because it stated information about it on the ball mount. The maximum towed weight was 800 lbs I think, but may have been less.

"TOWING A TRAILER
We do not advise using this vehicle for trailer towing purposes"

And hell, I agree with them

My 2.5L 4-banger S10 could barely pull a trailor... I wouldn't want to see an RX-7 even try....

I've heard of people using small like Class 1 hitches to take tire trailers to track events and such, that's about it... They've gotta be available...

I know I've seen pics of FC's and FD's with them...

YOU can not pull a trailer with an FB. Sounds like you're moving, so you're probably wanting to rent a Uhaul trailer to pull stuff. Uhaul will not rent you a trailer unless you have a full size pickup, or a full size van as a MINIMUM requirement.

The Rx-7 brakes arent the best in the world for its own weight......imagine trying to stop with another 1000lbs of weight pushing you forward.

I strongly recommend renting a 14" Uhaul, and towing the Rx-7 behind it on a 4 wheels off the ground auto transport.

You will have more than enough room in the Uhaul to move your items you planned on putting in a trailer.

I dunno, my 2.2l cavalier towed a 4000LB buick 40 KM at 120KPH, just fine....

and my 300,000 mile 1985 1.8l honda prelude towed that same car at 110KPH BACK, also just fine... I had to keep it in 3rd, but still...
That was a loud trip, my ears are still ringing

Here's a MUCH better idea.

Rent one of the bigger uhauls, put the fb INSIDE, and pile your **** around it. That's how my 10th AE got here from alberta (2000KM trip). It'll be cheaper than having a hitch made or renting a smaller uhaul and a car trailer.

For those of you trying to downplay my idea of pulling a trailer with my 1st gen, just stop now. My intent of this thread wasn't for that. I have no other choice.

Oh, by the way, U-Haul will rent a trailer to me, I just called them and they qouted me $299.68 for them to install a hitch and give me a 4 x 6 ft. trailer form here to South Dakota.

I have a lot of confidence that my 1st gen can make it fine. I have enough power to basically blow most 1st gens away. I plan on giving it new brakes, oil, coolant, tires, and all other fluids, before I make the 1600 mile journey.

I now know that U-Haul can do it, but they are pricey, so im wondering if anyone has one they would sell to me, or know of where i can find one for less.

I have gotten a couple of leads, and thank you for that

eh, i dont advise towing any thing with a small car like the 7.

but one of my friends put a hitch on the back of his Geo Metro and used to to get a 2J, 4ag, and a 13b all compleate motors. home. its was a strange sight to see. but the car did it.

You need some new rotors, Hawk pads, and stainless brake lines!

There's nothing wrong with the rx7's brakes. Towing a smallish load will be fine. Good luck to the guy looking for a hitch, there should be viable options out there.

$299?

Man. I just rented a Uhaul and towed my Rx-7 and took all my stuff to North Dakota not too long ago.

I paid $149 for the 14' Uhaul, and $62 for the trailer.

Thats what...$211? And you get more than enough space to put everything, and dont risk your FB.

Yea for sure. I thought they blew too, until i had the rotors turned and put a new set of pads on. I can't wait to see how it stops with new rotors, calipers, hawk pads and rear disks.

Cody,

I would also love to rent a 14' U-Haul plus the trailer, but unfortunatly U-Haul has an age restriction. I am only 20yrs old and you have to be 21yrs old to rent the trucks. This is why I need to find a hitch and small trailer. I only need enough space to put my computer, stereo, clothes, gun, and other stuff.

Don't need a really big trailer.

I would absolutely love a hitch as well (to bring my dirt bike places) so if you find any good solutions please share them =].

If my car can make it from Vegas to Colorado Springs loaded down to all hell I'm sure it can tow about 600 pounds (guestimate of bike and trailer) on a relatively easy route no problem.

I have been looking for a hitch as well. I want to set up a small trailer to pull my racetires and tools on to farther events. I am tired of spending hours in the car sniffin' race rubber. It smells good at first, but after about 30 minutes, I'm tired of it. Uhaul has been the only place I have had any luck in turning up one, but they are pricey in KY too. Might just have to break down and do it.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the great ideas. I have decided to sell my car. Many reasons have led up to this, but mostly becasue I will be moving to South Dakota this summer to work on a ranch, and I can't afford to not have a truck. Some other reasons also.
Thanks for all the support and thoughts. I won't probably have another Rx7 until later in life. Time to move on.

Ben

yeah the thing with towing, is you need lots of low end torque.

and our cars have, well.... zilch in that area.
