Need Help With My 84-85 Ashtray

The ashtray in Gus was broken when I bought him and I need some help troubleshooting. I would like to repair it, but I have never seen one of these ashtrays that isn't broken. All of the ones I have ever come across are broken. Mine appears to be 95% complete, but when you push the button to open it nothing happens. When I removed my carpet I found a little spring on the floor. I am wondering if this is the missing piece to get the astray working again?

Please look at the picture of the spring I found. Does this go to the ashtray? What is broken on my ashtray, and what do I need to do to get it working again?

Jamie

The tab is broken off in the pic.

I think that Mazdatrix still sells them.

I think I have an ashtray somewhere from my 85, If you need it I can get it to you for cost of shipping, or you could pick it up. I was going to throw it away anyway.

That's about a 2 hour drive from me. How about I just paypal you $10 and you can mail it to me? Sound good? Just PM me your paypal address and I'll send you the money for shipping. The ashtray does work, right? Just wanted to be sure.

Thanks!

Found it Works great, no broken tabs. Only bad thing is the door is shedding. You can just use your door. Just hope you don't need the trim surrounding it, because... it died.

Here's some pics.

My paypal is Dcashdollar@gmail.com

When you say the "trim surrounding it" are you talking about the black housing that the ashtray door fits into? Or the big silver dash piece that goes around the radio, and heater controls?

The heater/radio/shifter surround. The ashtray is flawless minus the peeling finish.

Yes that is the spring

I just looked at my ashtray. There should be a steel rod that goes across then this spring would mount on that rod, and that is what pushes out the ashtray.

Gotcha. Thanks for the info. I still wasn't sure exactly why mine wouldn't work. Mine appears to have taken some rather serious damage then. I didn't have the rod or any of the plastic that it fits into. I can see where it is supposed to go though. Using the remnants of mine, and the functioning one Dcashdollar is sending me I should be able to put together a nice looking functional one to complete Gus' dash.
