Need help identifying bolts/clips for front end of a series 1 rx7?
I wanted to do a dummy fit of all the panels on the car before doing some bodywork but are missing some fittings and don't know where a few of them go.
i didn't bag and tag from the start when I first stripped wich I should have.
Here are some pics of the fittings I have, just want to know what I'm missing and what goes where? Iv got the bolts for the stone tray there not in the pictures.

if you can wait a bit, i'm working on a mazda part number to fastener style and size spread sheet.
that way you can look in the parts catalog, and figure out which goes where.

I tried matching up a couple of fittings from the parts catalog but its a bit of a headache.
I need to dummy fit my front end before priming and doing some body work just to see if the fit is nice and all the panel gaps line up.
I guess lesson learned if I ever do another car to bag and tag from the start lol
Thanks for replying

That would be good J9FD3S whenever you get the chance.

The two bolts with a "6" and the larger flared head are fender bolts. They attach on the top of the fender (five of them do) and on the bottom (2 bolts there).
The same size bolts with a "6" and the smaller flared head are used to piece together the fenders to the upper nose valence (piece that goes between the headlights), bolt the upper nose valence to the upper cross member of the front structure (the piece that the hood hinges pass through), bolt the lower chin spoiler to the two lower valence pieces (I think you called them the "stone tray"?), and the two stone tray pieces to the fenders.
The flat clips (that look like money clips) with the nut welded to them slide onto the tabs for securing the fenders to the upper nose valence, and the two pieces of stone tray to black plastic grille. Two each go on the stone tray.
The smaller flat clips without the nuts (I think they're commonly called J-clips?) I think go on the back bumper, but I cannot remember exactly where.
The circular plastic piece with the split tangs goes on the stone trays. Each gets one.
The inner fender is held in place by some of the small screws you have. They screw into small square plastic pieces.
I have pictures in my build thread on some of the more recent pages of the stone trays, lower valence pieces, upper valence bolts in place without the valence (as I painted to keep paint out of the threaded holes), and of the rear bumper where the J-clips went a bit further back in the thread.
I don't know where the washers go, and I think that some of the other screws go to mount things inside the engine bay and on the firewall, like the hood latch mechanism and some of the relays. That might just be trial and error to see which one goes where.
Hope that helps.

a bolt ending in a 612 has an 11mm long threaded part, and a 620 is 15mm
and of course the 6 in the 612 refers to the thread size. so an 9978-60-612 is a 6mm bolt with an 11mm long thread.
and a 9978-60-616 is the same head style, but 15mm long thread.
an 9978-80-616 would be the same bolt head style, but an 8mm x 15mm thread length, although its not verified yet
i need to find an instance of the next longer bolt that hasn't been touched, but it should be ~19mm?

That would be SO freakin' awesome!
I'm at the same process of my build (or slightly ahead but at a slower pace) and I can tell you where some of those go. Let me give it a try:

the previous owner had a fibreglass group c front bumper on the car screwed into the fenders I think that's where the screws are from.
I'll have a look at your build thread too, thanks again.

it is, i haven't cracked the code yet, although i can say that, given something like 9978-60-612
a bolt ending in a 612 has an 11mm long threaded part, and a 620 is 15mm
and of course the 6 in the 612 refers to the thread size. so an 9978-60-612 is a 6mm bolt with an 11mm long thread.

They could of labeled the parts catalog a lot better by using the exact name for the fitting instead of clip a,b,c...etc.

Thanks woodmv I got where most things go now was dummy fitting everything today was a bit of a headache lol
I think the bolts with '6' and the larger flared head also bolts the upper valance to the chassis(under the bonnet). The smaller flared bolts seem a bit small, or are they used with a washer?

I had my bolts all separately bagged and labeled prior to painting them, but mixed them up on a string of tape to paint them, and some extra fender bolts and front end stuff bolts of the same size and pitch that I've collected. I have five bolts without the '6' but with a washer, so I'm guessing that they're used to bolt the upper valence to the chassis (since you only need four there).
Either way, you can't go wrong.

You're very welcome! And you are correct, they are the same thread size and pitch so either will work there. I don't recall seeing the larger flared head bolts there - only on the fenders.

Im bout to have another go at dummy fitting today I couldn't get the bumper on the mounts yesterday properly as the driver side mount was bent a bit when I first got the car but I knocked it out straight and you can't even tell it was damaged, but it just doesn't want to line up I think maybe the mount is twisted alittle bit. Series 1 bumpers and mounts are very hard to come by over here in australia.

Thanks that's the way I'll go then. Still couldn't get bumper the mounted up.
I'll straightened the mount but the bar is still bent that's why it won't go on I'll have to get the bar straightened, or maybe even look for a 2nd hand one on this forum, I can't find nothing over here in Australia.
