Need electrical help

My brake lights are out. My running lights/turn signals/reverse lights are working. I looked in the storage bin where I repaired previously corroded wires and re-did them to no avail. The brake switch is getting power as well. Is there a relay that can stop them from going on? All bulbs and fuses are fine but sometimes (very rarely) the brake lights will work but the stop light warning light in the gauge cluster is illuminated. Any ideas?

On mine there is a main connector to the rear harness in the drivers side storage compartment. If you live in the rust states, then I would examine this plug...

Not a relay, as such, but a "stop light checker". Otherwise known as an expensive relay.

It's under the dash, attached to the column, I believe.
I am not going under the dash to check.

The attached diagram shows the basic idea; if you jump the W and G wires and the brake lights work, it's the checker. If they do not work, it's the checker or it's ground. It's ground, by the way, is in the engine bay and is not the most likely source of your problem.
