This may sound really simple, but check the fuses under the dash for the Fuel Pump Relay - wouldn't you kick yourself if it was something that stupid?!?
RX7Doctor - the AFM seems to be running correctly; after looking at the car last night, the AFM only activates fuel flow when keys are in 'run', engine stopped, and open AFM door manually. The FP is turning on when it should, and off when it should.
I agree that looking at the flooding and backfiring may be due to a bad signal from the coolant temp sensor on the WP. This is in contrast to the fuel mileage that SimRX7 seems to be getting, however - he states 30mpg highway, and about 20 city. That's a lot better mileage than I'm getting and I KNOW my engine isn't running rich!
Fuel pump seems to be in order at this point, then onto the other issues.
As stated on the phone with you earlier, Sim; these things usually get worse before they get better, but at least then you have more information to go on...
Good luck,

Driveabilty issue from hell
Well guys, it seems that it needs to get back to basics. The 30mpg is way beyond normal for an Se, so is 20 in the city. Unless it is just running that lean, but then the exhaust would be glowing and the overheat light would come on for the exhaust.
Longduck, did he get the car started?
If he has not, need to check the basics. Is their fuel coming out of the pressure hose from the pump? Is it getting good spark to both the leading and trailing plugs? There is the main relay in the engine bay located along the left side of the fenderwell near the firewall that can cause problems. But i say stick to the basics first. Too bad you guys do not have a fuel pressure gauge. Do you at least have
a timing light to check for spark. If not you can pick up one of those inline spark tester for around $8-$9 to see if it is a ignition issue.
The key is to check it as it acts up.
Longduck, if you want to pm me your Ph# i will contact you tommorow night if you have time and go over a few things with you. rx7doctor

-i did get the car restarted after about 3 minutes...then nursed it home about a mile or so. couldnt use throttle at all at that point. i did have a screwdriver to check teh fuel line but it was dark.
-as for spark... timing was dead on in the parking lot with longduck sat. night.
-and i have not had the exhaust temp light come on(unless the bulb is blown) nor have i seen the header glow at nightime. hard to check the fuel when it acts up, by yourself.

i just went to start my se...started up, revved to 2k then died.
checked the pressure hose...dribble. i thought Fi systems, even on startup, would shoot fuel across the room.
and i heard the fuel pump running too.
suggestions???

Yes, fuel pressure in an EFI system will be stout, to say the least.
I think this is even more indication that it's a problem with your pump, pump wiring, or pump relay.
Thanks for the offer to troubleshoot with us, RX7Doctor - if you offer this service up to SimRX7, he can probably get more mileage out of it than me at the moment.
Appreciate you continuing to follow this with us,
