My New Dream :D
Me and my uncle were talking after riding in his boxster S. He tells me that his favorite car that he ever owned was his 1983 Mazda Rx-7. I was excited cuz thats the Rx7 is the car Ive been lookin at to buy when I turn 16 . So now I'm sure thats what I want. Can I get a 1st or 2nd gen Rx7 with ~~~$4000 that is in good condition?

With 4K you could get a good one, and have some money left over for the go-fast goodies.

he said he woulda had it longer, but he told me that his rx7 was made from recycled japanese steel so thats why he had to get rid of it. anyone else heard this?

Yeah, look for a rust-free 85 GSL-SE. You wont regret it. Theyre definatly nice cars. I have an 85 GSL-SE, an 85 GSL, an 84 GS, and an 83 GSL. Of them all, I still like to ride around in the SE the most, it zips around quite well (although the 83 GSL is catching up now that I have all those mods ). Anyway, thats just my two cents. Oh, and if you dont know, the 85 GSL-SE has a larger 13B engine, fuel injection, and an air-to-oil cooler, as opposed to the smaller 12A engine, which is carbureated (4 bbl), and a water-to-oil cooler (less efficent). The -SE also has larger 14 (15?) inch rims, and has a more common bolt pattern making it MUCH MUCH easier to find wheels and tires that fit. Anyway, whatever you get, have fun with it .

Carbs are for nerds. There's no point in sticking with carbs IMHO. You can achieve everything you can with a carb by using fuel injection, and more. Rather than having your engine tuned for a specific RPM, you can have ideal air/fuel ratios mixed across the entire RPM range. Computer, injectors and maybe a new fuel pump and you'll clean up the carb guys assuming you have all the other associated mods.
I'm personally a big fan of my '85 GSL-SE.

EFI is for people who don't understand how to tune carbs. j/k But, why would you wanna go EFI when you can have one of these under the bonnet?

Come on now. If I'm going to run EFI some day (which I will on my bridge-port) it's going to be a proper aftermarket ECU and 50mm IDA style throttle bodies. That stock, restrictive analog system doesn't even come close to the performance and flexibility of my carb setup.

Yeah I'm very aware that it's super restrictive, but, it's killing my buddies supra so far :p ... He's just finished his next mod, expects to run a high 13, we're gonna give it a go this weekend, see who wins
which reminds me, has anybody removed that flap in the afm and had any possitive or negative results?

Calm down, calm down. You guys need to find a EFI vs. carb battle board. And, EFI all the way here...
As for what car to get for $4k, I think your options are wide open for both 1G and 2G RX-7s. Do some model research and you'll be glad you did. A few people have done the research for you and put it on their pages. My favorite is Beyond the Redline for that kinda stuff.
