My new $80 SA

Bought it from some lady who didn't know much about it and had it sitting on the side of her house for a while. The body is pretty straight with a few dings and scratches. The interior is pretty much shot. It is definitely a project car

Heres a few pics:

Anyways the engine turns over but won't start, I put fuel in it( didn't have any at all before) and pulled the fuel lines off at the engine and it is getting fuel fine. So I am thinking it is a problem with the spark. Are there supposed to be resistors between the spark plug wires and body shown in the 4th picture?

nope. A little too late but I hope that you poured a cap full of oil in each barrel to lubricate the seals and handcrank it. (besides, oil helps build compression).

Run a wire from the battery + to both coils + terminals. then start away while pouring gas directly on the carb.

Yep, that was going to be the next step. I've always played with fuel injected cars and don't know sh*t about arburators. How hard/time consuming is this to do?

I just did my first carb rebuild today (RB Holley 465 4bbl), and it took me ~5 hours. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time, and be extremely organized, and you'll do just fine. I forgot to order new floats, so that's on the docket for ordering tomorrow. New floats are cheap insurance to make sure everything runs fine when you first try and fire it up. After 20 years, they are probably gas-logged and no longer perform their function.

(f.y.i. if you dont' know what a float in a carb does, it does the same thing as the float in your toilet tank.)

change fuel filter! $3 at auto parts store-
under rear of car, driver side, in front of rear wheel...
Likely need to drain and re-seal fuel tank - will be gunked up from bad gas and corrosion due to moisture condensation.

the car does look pretty good for what you paid!!! along with rebuilding the carb and replacing teh fuel filter, test for spark, and run a compression test, just to see where your engine is at. if the numbers are a little low, atf the engine(prob couldnt hurt anyways). replace all of the fluids and brakes. we may need more pics of the car though. also, here is the link to the fsm's (from trochoid's sig) http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/cars/rx7/manuals.html they will help you out immensly. if you have further questions please feel free to ask. welcome to the darkside!!

Yep, you got a deal. Let me know if you would like to have your $ 80 back. At least you would not have all these worries.

Ahhhhh, I remember getting my $100 SA. Looks like you have a '80. That's the same year as my SA. Good find. Thanks for saving another one.

thats cool man! There was a lady with an SA identical to that one where I live, a real rusted out POS. But for some reason she thought she was sittin on un-tapped gold, said she wanted 12K for the car, but since i was into mazdas, she would only take 10 grand... haha, your's is actually nicer than hers was. Sweet project man!
