I am going to potential buy my first RX-7 this weekend, an '85 GSL-SE.

When I look at the car, what are the common problem areas that I should look over real closely?

Of those areas, which ones would make you think twice about buying the car?

What would you consider a fair price for this car with a good body, nice interior, and running engine?

slow down sparky.

remove the bins look in there see any bad rust? like you can see the ground, lift up and look under the spare too. run your fingers under the wheel wells on the body you should feel rust if its there. look under the doors too there may be some rust there

next check the engine, any oil leaks? everything look clean? or is it a dusty engine bay? check everything, gas tank opening, hatch opening, sunroof does it leak? does the heater work? how about the ac? brakes feel good pedal doesnt go all the way to the floor, how about the clutch does that feel good too? any signs of damage? check under the car too, see if the frame is bent at all.

as for a price hard to tell without pics.
