The circular air vents at the corners of the dash are absolute proof it's not an '84 or '85 car.

Haha that center console makes the perfect cell phone holder as you found out. I put mine there and can take some HARD turns and it never moves.

How old are you? I'm 18 and I've been driving a 94 Mercury But I bought/buying an 83 RX-7 from my uncle, I have to do tranny work, basics though, I have to put a clutch kit in. Mine isn't in near as good condition as your's is most of the stuff is in the back and the interior carpet and everything is crap. But yours is in so good of shape. But then again I only paid 250 for mine.

The little bit on the exhaust and a little bit on the firewall in one spot. Thats pretty much it.

That is one gorgeous 7! Very nice and very clean. Take good care of it! They are a dying breed. I bought my first car when I was 15 too. It wasn't an RX-7 though, but I did want one. I have had my 7 for 10 years now!

You heard wrong. A big street port with a working air pump and a Random Tech 3-way cat will pass inspection. I know because I did it. The Nikki carb was rebuilt but only to stock conditions and the exhaust ran 2" primaries into a 2.5" exhaust all the way to the back.

I don't know TX law on emissions, but CA is RIDICULOUS!!! I was born and raised there before joining the military. California cars are SO awesome when it comes to avoiding rust, but as you will find there are a LOT of BS emission additions in CA version of these cars(as well as many others). If it was originally sold in Cali see if the mechanic can change some of the emission stuff up without it failing the inspection when you get the motor built. Sorry so late, but I just saw this post...GORGEOUS car!!! Wish mine was that good. I got mine for $1100 in great running condition, but your interior is SO much better than mine!!! And I thought my interior was good. Yours looks brand new. Be VERY careful! I know I'm a noob to FB's, but I've heard they can get squirly real easy. If you lost this car in an accident(we pray against that!) you'll cry about it later(and so will we). Cause like everyone that owns an FB will tell you, FB's in that condition are nearly impossible to come by!!! Treasure that jewel man! Congrats.
