Question My engine won't start when it is hot?

Has this happened to anyone else? I have a 1979 rx-7 that the prevoius owner put a 1982 engine with an egr for california. It also has an electronic ingition. I've always had a problem with it starting when it was hot, even before it started burning excessive oil. it will run now, but will not idle unless the choke is on. as soon as the choke goes off the car will shut off, and will not stary again until it is cold again, i'm confused? I need a new engine regardless, but if i am going to buy a new block i don't want to have this problem again, any suggestions. Keep in mind I still have to pass california smog for the next three years! Please, help, thanks alot!

Hot starting when hot, my Rx-2 did that, I had to shoot some oil down the carb to get the compression up enough to start. Might want to throw on a compression gage to see what you have, but then again you may not want to know.

Good luck on the smog, I parked my '83 for the past 5 months because it failed CA dyno smog test. I will work on it this winter and see if I can get the HC down.

Sounds like your battery cables might be worn out. Can you here the starter spin when you turn the key, or does it just not do anything?

could be carb related. it happened to me. when i would shut it off fuel would still leak down the manifold and cause it to flood.

I have a similar problem with my 83 GSL. Won't start hot most of the time unless I pump the gas pedal 5 or 6 times. Sometimes need to repeat the procedure 3 or 4 times. I'm seeing some faint blue exhaust at idle, so I'm thinking tired engine. Any other ideas?
