my car won't crank! wtf!

ok.. so, I just picked up this -SE with a 12a in it yesterday.. the P.O. hooked up jumper cables on it wrong and destroyed the main fusable link.. I twisted the ends of it togehter and voila.. it has power! I've got another fusable link on order but it takes a week..

Anyways, the first time I tried to crank it it cranked slowly 2-3 times.. then I stopped. I tightened the terminals on the battery and attached jumper cables to it from my truck... I got nothing.. I might have got some clicks but I don't think so.

What's wrong here?

sounds like just a bad battery cause the 7's have a bad history of having bad batteries, but when you jump it it should work.....my guess is either ignition switch or starter.....it's alright at least you don't have to have a rolling start to get yours going, lol

Check your fuseable links, remove the terminals and reinstall (or pour some coca cola over the terms) If not then I would say the starter is now dead. You could have just continued your other thread you know. Go to parts store and get a 12a starter (8 tooth opposed to the 12 tooth for -SE's). Keep us posted. Good luck.

Disconnect the ground from the battery and try to boost the car. If it turns over faster then you know it`s the battery. If it`s the same as before, then it`s your starter.

rotorfire: I have to push start my pickup every single time, so there!

I'm not quite ready to buy a starter yet.. besides, I don't think I'd go to a parts store for one anyways.. there are definatly cheaper routes

toughguy: it won't turn over AT ALL now
and the battery that i put into it should be good, it's out of my pickup and used to start it just fine... until the starter died anyways

bump.... anything else? Could it be anything else or is the starter dead? (I haven't tried the fusable links yet, its dark out.. lol)

I just don't want to go buy a starter and have mine be just fine and the problem not solved..

check to make sure that your starter terminals are clean. Mine just stopped workin one day while i was inside my school. Got it home, brushed up the starter wires and watnot and it started right up

It may have some thick oil in it. Put a blow dryer on it for 5 minutes or so.

I'd also do a little research in the Carlito posts. This car has its history documented on this club.

corrosion will do that, also it sounds like your battery is completely dead. possibly your ground cable is shot not allowing your battery to recharge. give your battery a good charge (if it's dead) and see what happens.

i almost got stuck at work today because of this...i took out the fuses...saw alot of corosion on it...i wiped it off a little...got enough contact to start the car and take it home...this weekend i'll probably take it all out and clean the whole dang thing...

btw, this is why i was having rough starts...the contact was so loose the vibrations of the engine was interfearing with the fusible link contacts...

and yes...it is annoying
