My 83 12a turbo......Video

Hey Guys,
Ive been on this site for about 4 years and never posted a pic or video of my car. I know I love seeing other people's Rx-7's in action and figured maybe someone would enjoy watching this vid.
Basically im running a 12a stockport, s4 turbo, 45 dcoe, and all the other stuff like upgraded fuel system and intercooler. Im currently at 10-11 psi, and im running a little rich while cruising in the vid because i just put in a new main stack ( f7 e tubes, 150 air correctors, 195 mains). I was trying to get rid of my part throttle while accel lean condition. I thought the float level was dropping and exposing more of the e tube thus making it leaner, but now I have rich e-tubes (f-7's) and it still is doing it. I think I need to throw in some smaller air corrector's. Anyways Ill shut up now, here's the vid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAhVXSb9-lg
Its not great, my new Hawk pads squeal like a bitch and my girlfriend (cameraman) gets a little bouncy at the end.
Thanks everyone, my car would never be what it is without this forum

Looking and sounding good Brendan!

Did you get the intercooler installed already? Also what did you end up doing with the clutch, and what did you find?

Awesome to see your car on the road and it seems like it's performing excellently!

Hey Dan,
I found that the clutch pressure plate was slightly hitting the raised portion of the flywheel and therefore not applying full force on the clutch disc due to being held back slightly. I thought maybe it just wasnt installed properly as far as needing to be rotated to the next mounting alignment. But i tried it in 3 different positions and all caused interference with the flywheel, just a shitty aftermarket design I guess.
I had the tranny out and new clutch in within an hour so it was no big deal.
I put the intercooler in last week, i ended up not putting it in front of the rad like we talked about but out front just like yours. I think it looks badass, ill try to grab a pic for everybody. I also realized today that there is no way that my stock front bumper is going to fit back on without some serious cutting disc action.

Heres a few pics, I know its not the prettiest thing but its all I need. Lots of stuff still needs to be buttoned up the way I like it. Lots of things are just the way they are because it works that way, but I have many hours ahead of me making it a little more presentable and funtionable.

Nice, looks pretty lean under boost too 12:1 A/F"s? Is that WB or NB? I'd shoot for high 10:1 on a rotary.... Then add the methanol injection and up the boost they love it!

Don't worry about the bouncy. It looked like you were hitting a rough patch of road long with her zooming in on the gages.

THX!!

I have a meth inj. for the car, just havent installed yet. I plan to go to 12-14 psi once the meth kit is in.
Its an AEM wideband. I thought 12:1 was a decent A/F for 10psi. I can throw the bigger mains back in and get about 11.2:1 A/F. Im still trying to tune the little bugs out of the drivability. Basically if I roll from a light and slowly floor it, the guage just goes max rich and the car sputters and backfires untill I let off, soo basically 1st gear right now is useless except for getting me to second. I dont know what the deal is, ive tried different fuel pressure, e-tubes, idle jets, mains, im just stumped. Thanks for the comments guys!

12.0:1 is alright for a boosted piston motor. Rotaries use the extra fuel for lube and cooling. (hope your running pre-mix as well) So shoot for low 11's high tens at WOT.

Actually with an m15 nozzle on the alky injection you're A/F's are probably alright. The alcohol should bring you to high tens, low 11's.

Your problem is midrange flooding. Your trying to go to big on the secondary jetting and not big enough on the primary. I'd try upping your primary jet 20% and down sizing your secondary around 20%. Then add a progressive style map based meth injection system.

After you get your WOT and midrange figured out then play with the air bleeds to get your cruise figured....

Good luck!

Cool little car!

I dont have primary's and secondary's, wish I did! Im running a Weber 45 sidedraft. 2 barrel baby! This thing is a bitch to tune for drivability, I think there are somethings Ill just have to live with. Basically I think that my 1st gear mega rich problem is due to velocity in the carb. If I rev the car to like 3k then aggresivley launch ( not really, but you get the idea) the car it wont bog, sputter, go hella rich. So its probally more just the character of a 2 barrell sidedraft more then anything else, unless someone knows otherwise???

what he was refering to is your pilot jets and main jets. In a 2 bbl sidedraft carbs the pilot jets act as the primaries in a 4bbl, and the main jet stack acts as the secondaries. What he's suggesting is that your progression from primary to secondary is too rich for the air velocity pulling through the carb. The overlap of the primary and main circuits is super fat right now. Raising the pilot jet size will raise the rpm at which it drops off and lowering the main size will raise it's starting point. So, what you're doing is effectively shifting the circuit overlap to higher in the rpm range where air flow through the carb has more velocity. Hope that makes since... give it a shot and watch your a/f's...

Thanks for clarifying, it was late I was tired!

If you get a progressive map based alky inj. system it will also help. It will act more like a fuel injected car then. gradually upping the alky flow with boost.

I wouldn't mess with it again until you strap on the alky or you'd have to re-tune it all over agian.

Can we see some under the hood pics or what? Sounds very slick, what kind of power do you think you are putting down?

Ill try to post up some underhood shots tonight. Im not tottaly satisfied with my intercooler piping as i basically had to make my carb box work as I didnt have time to cut a reweld the inlet for the intercooler piping to face the left hand side. I was going on a big organized road trip, hence that blue sticker in my back window (ill remove it immediately).
AS far as power.. I have no idea. I know that its quicker then a Porsche Boxster S, on the highway, hehe. If I had to guess, maybe 180-200 whp.
Ill also try to get a vid of my tach and speedo for everyone (mostly all those wanting to turbo there 12a, to compare). My car is sooo much fun, I wouldnt really ever see needing a quicker car for around town.

Haha, we will go out for a spin at some point when my car is done. Should be interesting because your car is pretty quick at 200 ish rwhp, just imagine what 400+ will be like.

By the time your car is done ( well say next summer), i dont think there will be any pavement on the roads anymore. Its hard enough finding a smooth patch of pavement to go full throttle already. If im not carefull, im sure ill be busting diffs and tranny's.
Just so you know Dan, my car drives totally different from when you came for a ride, I got all the little issues sorted out. Ill have to take you for another rip once the meth inj. kit is in.

Sounds good, I hopefully will have my engine together by the end of the week. Parts wise my car should be completed this year. But your right it probally won't be on the road until next year.

Seems like your doing an awesome job working out all the quirks with that thing. I'm impressed with how fast you got that intercooler piping setup and everything running as good as it is!

Who made your carb hat? I haven't had much luck finding one for my DCOE. I'll probably have to make my own or have Robert do it.
