my 7 won't quite start.
hey guys,
so I went to start my 84 GSL this morn, and the best I could get was a stutter. I checked fuel flow, which is good, spark and timing was also good, pulled the plugs, did a whoosh test, which sounds good, and then noticed that there is quite a bit of oil on the plugs. The last time I drove it, about a month and a half ago, I noticed that it was burning oil a little more than normal. I tried adjusting the omp metering screw and tried again, but it just spuddered a few times then died. Not sure whats goin on, and I cant find any info on the threads to help me. any help would be awesome. thx

With any luck, she's just flooded. Grab a can of Seafoam, dump a couple ounces down the carb, then try again. She'll smoke white for a bit after starting, but that's a normal side effect of using Seafoam directly like that.

Double check timing with a timing light. You should know if it's flooded by looking at the plugs. If you have a strong gas smell. if it's just oil, you might have a broken oil seal.

ya it smells like gas to me, but there seams to be more oil on the plugs then normal. I'll see if I can find some sea foam and give that a shot. ATF works also, does it not? If its an oil seal its no big deal, I gotta couple kickin around but I really dont wanna waste the 15 hrs to rip the engine open if I dont have to. That and I'm havin a hard time findin a 54mm socket for the flywheel

I got thinkin last night, there's oil on all four plugs. If it was an oil seal wouldn't there be oil on just the 2 plugs with the bad seal? Of course I know that just means that 2 seals could be botched, but I'm hopin that's not the case.

I would think that if it ran fine a month and a half ago, when you last drove it, that it should run fine now. I know mine doesn't like to start very easily after sitting for just a week.
Are you sure it's oil on the plugs, and not just gas that looks like oil from the carbon on the plug heads?

nah it was most definately oil. I could smear it on arm and it would be black. found an equivilant to seafoam (motomaster tune up in a can) this morning, and it fired up, but it burned a lil blue and was back to its 1200 rpm idle. I messed around with the carb all day today and got it down to a very clean 800 rpm, but its still burnin a lil blue. Plugs are dry when I pull them out now tho. Gonna do an oil change on it and see if I can find some stuff to throw in to clear up the blue. but its runnin better than ever, so thx guys. I only had to take the carb off 3 times too! :S
