SK My 7 build

Well i started out with this 84 gsl-se with a motor that i knew was gonna have to be replaced.

So after some searching i found this one.

The motor came from an 87 turbo II. The guy that had this car did pretty much everything to it aside from a stand alone fuel system.

And in no time Cam at CWS tuning plopped the motor in.

So finally started driving it and noticed that there was a whine coming from the rear end. Turned out to be the bearings in the diff. So i called adam at rx7 specialties and he said that they had one to fit my car. Once it came and i had a chance to fit it i end up with this.

Now i can't get a response from adam and im left with my car not moveable. Any suggestions on what to do for a diff??? I was tossing around the thought of a ford 9" but then there is the Kaaz (sp) out of a miata. So let me know what you think. Any suggestions would be great.

go to the pick n pull on barlow. usually a couple rx7's there.

adam can be slow in responses but he often pulls through. ive only dealt with him a couple times and sometimes its painful waiting for some response.

or since urs is done take it out and rebuild it. or the kia option. ford rear end gets pricy

nice lookin 7 though. i will look for you soon on the streets lol

Ouch, I needed a steeringbox from him. He stayed past 7:30 waiting for me, we both went to his storage and together picked the best one. He did 2 engine builds for me as well. Always treated me great! Call him tomorrow, he good in my book! Looking at the door moldings on you car I have to wonder if yours is a gslse transplant. Did you verify the vin number for the year? And......nice transplant btw. What did you do with the hood to cool the TMIC? I have a friend who just did the transplant and hasn't done anything with his hood yet.

Ya i did check the vin, i also have a diff from a gsl. It fits the housing but the axle shafts wont fit into the diff. I could also put up a pic of the gsl-se emblem if that helps.

Hmmmmm, the gsl and gls se fit the same for 84 and 85 (interchangeable), the older diffs fit the pumpkin but have smaller axles. The GSL pumpkin is actually better then the SE pumpkin.

They both have 4 clutches in the posi unit, the SE has 3 on one side and 1 on the other. Why Mazda did this who knows, I heard it was to allow it to slip a little since the SE motor had (back then) so much more torque and hp. The GSL posi unit has 2 clutches on either side providing a better balance.

Nice, I thought you might have mounted a scoop on the hood. Remember when you ask Adam to check your diff pic that you tell him the pic isn't from your tractor or pickup, you are in Saskatchewan after all. 1 in 10 chance you live in the city, and 3 in 10 you're on a reserve. Sooo farm truck is a natural assumption........

SK

lol ofcourse. I couldn't justify putting a scoop on the top of my hood and cutting a hole in the hood. Thus the front mount will go on once its driving.

i love how alot of people use the capri scoop on first gen's. i think more rx7 sa/fb guys know about the mercury capri lol.
ftw me and a friend own a 1984 rs turbo capri, so much better then a svo because of how rare they are and looks better. we all so have a hood and scoop from a 81 capri different scoop altogether. if we go with that scoop i mite use the type you posted on my sa. but iam leaning towards a sc insteed of a turbo at this point.

best of luck with that wide body.

I would suggest the turbo myself. BTW, I have a friend here running 300+hp out of a 2.3l ford. It's a pretty cool budget build, he's a mechanic so it's all shoe string custom including a holeset turbo all in a 71 pinto running mid 11's. Total investment all in, under $2000.....

yeah i wish the motor cost us that. i think where around 4k. but we did have like 1k in machine work. we allso have another 2.3 that where turning into a dohc motor. the na guys gain little over 100hp doing this. the turbo guys running 15 psi say they make around 400 hp. kinda funny a 2.3 at 8psi stock make more power then the v8 of the same year stock.

LOOK what i found.....

What are the chances I would find another 84 gsl-se??? So i now have any part i need at my disposal. On a side note i don't know why people say that the lsd's are the same between gsl's and the gsl-se's. The axle diameter is larger on the gsl-se axle shafts. I can put up pics if anyone wants to argue with me on this... gsl-se diffs ONLY fit gsl-se axles.

I just finished a gsl-se posi rebuild, and there are 8 clucthes, 4 on both sides. Here is a pic from the factory service manual.

The correct term is actually friction plates and fricton discs.... accordind to mazda just in case you need to order them.

It's a bit hard to see but it's page 9-15 of the online factory service manual. Side note the discs/plates are the same as the na second gen. Part number cross-referenced by me!!
