Looking to buy MSD ignition and run it to leading 2nd gen coil. Here's the kicker...I need an ignition box that also has a programmable RPM trigger output. I want to operate a compressor to open my 6 ports at 4K RPM.....please help.
Hey Nate,
I don't know of an MSD that has this, but it is not an issue. You only need an RPM switch. It can connect the the tach signal from the MSD. I think they are pretty cheap and you can get them at Summit, Jegs, etc. One of these RPM switches could be also used with the TT or a 2nd gen coil pack fired by an ECU (MegaSquirt, stock S4/S5 ECU, etc.). If you like building electronic circuits, you could build your own RPM switch as well. It is a pretty simple circuit.
You would use the switch to trigger a relay to operate the 5/6 ports.

some advice ditch the msd idea
it is possible but it is alot harder than if you bought a hks or something that is made for foreighn cars and actually have one for rotary, msd is for domestic i have looked over their whole catalog many times... once agian it is possible but just alot eiser probally cheaper and less problems if you go through a foreinghn specialist.

MSD 6A woks fine, and is any easy install....... I was not aware that hks made a unit for the first gen.... I know they have the plug n play "twin power" version for the fd.

LOL! Catalog... That's your first problem... MSD can be hooked up 10 different ways on a rotary that's why they don't list it in their catalog. that and them good ole boyz don't know squat aboot rotaries.

watch out if you run it through your distributor I hooked my unit up the other day on my new motor after 3500km of stock ignition, when I checked my timming it would bounce all over the place(crosstriggering i belive it is called and can happen with all after market units from what I've read) but it made the car feel better at start and a little more responsive allround, I took it off and the timming problem was gone so I feel safer with out it, I will try it again once I convert to direct fire, so that it doesnt go through the distributor.
If all else fails, Email MSD and ask them to fax you the info for making the connection. They should have it, I know they do for the 1st gen because I had them send it to me. Be patient though, it may take them a day or so to get to you.

from what i've gathered. you will either need 1 6A for just your leading spark plugs OR 3 6A's. One for the trailing and 2 separate ones for each trailing. I'm hazy about the trailing. Most people dont put MSD on the trailing on the 1st gens since its a lot of work that doesn't make much of a difference. And yes MSD direct fire will get u a lot more umph.
