minor issue with gas door

I have an 85 GS, with the electric door opener. I dont have a battery in, but I know how to pop the latch on it. My problem is, when I do that, it doesnt spring open. I see this becoming a problem when I get it on the road and I'm the only one in the car. I'm not long enough to pop the solenoid and open the door at the same time, and I dont really want to leave the interior half taken apart to access it from inside.

I'm curious what is the mechanism that actually makes it pop out when you pop the door? Is there supposed to be a little spring on the door hinge? I can yank one from the junkyard just need to know if theres a simple fix.

There is a small metal tab which is supposed to cause the door to pop open (if I recall correctly). You should be able to just give it a little bend to increase the tension. Also, lube up the plunger because sometimes they get a little sticky and can cause the same symptoms.

Good luck.

^^^Correct.

There is no actual spring, just a metal tab and the tension on this tab is what makes the door open.

As stated, just bend the metal tab if need be to create the desired tension on the door when it's pushed to close.
