Mikuni Sidedraft Carb, what am I getting into?

So my search turned up a few old for sale threads and alot of tuning problem threads. Are they really that much of a problem or am I just getting the wrong idea. I've got a guy that might be looking to sell one but I have to see if he'll separate the engine and tranny from it first. What are they worth? Sorry for all the questions as of late, been too busy to get this stuff up in an orderly manner. Hoping this will fix my backfire on cut-off issue I've been having so the 21 gun salute can finally end. Not sure if its an intake leak, exhaust leak, or due to my bent throttle linkage(not throttle shaft)

Not what I'm wanting to hear. The bent linkage causes a 1500 idle speed, can't get it any lower. I'm Hoping its just the gasket since when I pulled the manifold it dumped coolant all over it.

Maybe a vacuum leak is causing the high idle and also causing the backfire? Might it not be bent linkage? Sounds like you really need to get down and dirty and look over the exhaust for carbon deposits too.

I probably should have said that I just dropped in a RB header and new gasket less than a year ago. Know the idle is my own stupidity and rushing.
